Iceman shares his exhilarating journey of acquiring his first vintage Rolex, the Ref. 8171 'Padellone,' at a Geneva auction. This post captures the excitement of a collector's first auction experience and the profound connection forged with a historically significant timepiece.

Hi all

I saw a vintage Rolex awhile back, it was love at first sight. Since that day, my obsession with it begins. Searching day and night. Finally meeting it recently at one of genevas auction.

I wasnt sure what to expect being my 1st auction. But i guess the piece was meant to be with me. I won the bid

Here is the journey i took to HK to claim my price. I hope you enjoy it.

The short ferry trip to Hongkong from Kowloon, HKCEC convention centre, where
I will meet my new LOVE

The entrance

Crowd gather to inspect upcoming auction pcs.

The package arrived, the excitement is building.

A gift from christies.......and what is that nxt to it ? Could it be ?

Here it is, in its naked state

The cataloge

Ref 8171, The Padellone( big pan). Looks so much better in real life.

The DOME

Made in 1949-1952

A triple date calender, one of the most complicated movement for rolex at that time.

1000 pcs made in steel YG and RG. RG being the rarest . In total, Maybe less then 200pcs is left  in existance in all metal. LOVE THAT DOME smile

Never thought a 60 yr old watch can move my heart. I am so blessed.

Next to an icon belonging to my banker. ( i am in the wrong profession)

About the Rolex Padellone Ref. 8171

The Rolex Reference 8171, known colloquially as the 'Padellone' due to its substantial 38mm case diameter for its era, represents one of Rolex's few triple calendar models with a moon phase complication. Produced for a limited period between 1949 and 1952, it stands apart from the brand's more tool-oriented offerings, showcasing a sophisticated aesthetic that appeals to collectors seeking horological complexity from Rolex.

This self-winding chronometer is powered by the Caliber A.295 CPL 10 1/2" movement, featuring 17 jewels. The case, available in yellow gold, pink gold, or stainless steel, houses a silver sunburst dial, often referred to as 'cadran soleil argent,' with applied gold baton and dot numerals. It displays the date via a central gilt hand on an outer blue ring, with day and month indicated through angular apertures. A subsidiary dial at 6 o'clock combines moon phases with constant seconds. The case features a snap-on back and calendar correctors integrated into the band.

The Reference 8171 is highly regarded for its distinctive design and rarity, particularly the pink gold variants, which were produced in smaller quantities. Its large diameter, clean lines, and comprehensive calendar display contribute to its enduring appeal in the vintage watch market. The presence of original dial features, such as sharp apertures and uniform patina, is a key factor for collectors assessing authenticity and condition.

The watch has a nice even champange patiina on the dial. The hands has patina too. The case and dome are full of battle scaresss. But overall it is in very good condition. Far from perfect , but who would want a perfect vintage anyway Best Iceman.

I feel really blessed to hv met this gem. The dial has an even patina, thats why it looks pristine. But at certain angles you do see the aging process doing its job. Overall, a very good dial considering the age. This watch belongs to the family of the 1st owner. The person who sold the watch is the grand son of the original owner. Best Iceman You can see the even champange patina at this angle.
