MTR's candid account of acquiring the Rolex GMT-Master II in Everose gold offers a fascinating look into how a watch can defy preconceived notions. His initial apprehension about solid gold's ostentation gives way to an appreciation for its nuanced wrist presence, a journey many collectors can relate to when considering a significant new reference. This post delves into the unexpected allure of a timepiece that challenges personal style boundaries.

I casually (!!) mentioned to my favorite AD about a week ago that I really like the GMT Master II in RG and would be happy to try it on my wrist just once. Just to know what it feels like.

Because of all the current GMT models, this piece has always fascinated me the most, alongside the model in white gold with a meteorite dial. Last Friday evening (I was in Milan) I received a WhatsApp message that the watch was ready for me to view at my AD in my home town Viemna. In its original packaging. Brand new. Completely virginal.

Due to work reasons, I only had about 1 hour to visit my AD and have a look at this watch today.

I went there with the feeling that I should just look, not buy! Just look!!!

A Rolex in solid gold?? No way! Never! That doesn't suit me. That's far too ostentatious for me!

However, once I had this watch on my wrist, everything changed radically.

This watch is - despite the solid red gold - much less "flashy" (I cannot and do not want to use the word "more subtle" here) than I had thought.

And it looks incredibly harmonious on the wrist. That's why I was lost and pulled the trigger.

The lighting conditions were not good enough for multiple photos. These will follow later. Here's just a first impression, my dear watch friends.

Thanks for looking and - please - forgive me this „Red gold monster“… 🙏🙏🙏🙏

All the best
Thomas

P.S.: OMG, this was a „watch year“…
I vow improvement (= asceticism and watch diet) next year!

I’m long playing with the idea of getting this one, tried it numerous times, it was actually offered to me not long ago, and after I get my dream Daytona, this will be for sure next! Just as you well said it, it’s not flashy at all, same as you I’m not in to the flashy ride gold watches but this one is soo settle…! What a Christmas present…? 🎁
