Noak(marc.gmt8)'s candid reflection on his Rolex Daytona 116500LN ownership experience offers a valuable perspective on the intersection of hype, personal preference, and long-term satisfaction in luxury watch collecting. His journey from intense desire to ambivalence upon acquisition highlights a common dilemma for collectors navigating highly sought-after references. This discussion explores whether a watch's perceived value and market demand truly align with individual enjoyment and enduring appeal.

The Cosmograph Daytona reference 116500LN represents a significant evolution within the Daytona collection, introducing a black Cerachrom bezel to the steel model. This reference succeeded the 116520 and quickly became a highly sought-after contemporary chronograph. It maintains the classic Daytona aesthetic while incorporating modern material technology for enhanced durability and scratch resistance on the bezel.
This reference features a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from Oystersteel, paired with a fixed black Cerachrom bezel with an engraved tachymetric scale. It is powered by the in-house Rolex Caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement known for its robust construction and precision. The movement offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, ensuring water resistance up to 100 meters.
Appealing to collectors interested in modern Rolex chronographs, the 116500LN is available with either a white or black dial, both offering high contrast against the black bezel. Its combination of traditional steel construction with advanced ceramic technology positions it as a key reference in the ongoing development of the Cosmograph Daytona line, bridging classic design with contemporary material science.
My AD asked me if I wanted either a white or black one and after considering and trying both on, I passed. It should have been something I craved but honestly, the hype and the actual look and feel was underwhelming. I was happy to let the next folks have the opportunity. Too many other watches that excite me more. Kent
I was the other way round - I wasn’t into Daytonas and other sports Rolexes years ago (was a dress watch, Lange/Montblanc Villeret/JLC/indies guy) but the herd instincts got into me (yes I’m weak minded lol). After I started getting my sports Rolexes from my AD, I was initially feeling “what’s the hype?!” But after wearing the steel Daytona, Pepsi, Sub for months and months, I grew to appreciate them a lot. They are very good “go anywhere do anything” kind of watches. Very solidly built, accurat
...but haven't had the chance to play with it (Covid). But I was very surprised at how slim it was... It really is a beautiful watch. Were I to get a Rolex to complement my old Sub this might be it.
Here's my one and only Daytona, which I'll never sell....I believe it's the prior generation to yours. Cheers.
And also your pictures are superb! Just remember what happened with the original Paul Newman Daytonas. At first nobody wanted them, now they are grails! I think eventually it will grow more and more into you, until you can’t take it off. But if not, you will have absolutely no problem finding a happy new owner. Enjoy it! René
As also are your shirts. Best. René
