DrStrong's 2009 post captures a vibrant gathering of vintage Rolex enthusiasts, showcasing an extraordinary collection of rare timepieces. This article highlights the camaraderie and shared passion among collectors, offering a glimpse into the world of high-end vintage Rolex collecting and the unique stories behind these iconic watches.

having lunch with some old friends from all over Europe is always a great moment of passion ....especially in a beautiful place, while enjoying nice weather and tasty food….

When the guys around the table are some of the hottest vintage Rolex afficionados of the planet, the whole thing can quickly turn into a vintage Rolex GTG....with some really heavy stuff on the table...

Here are the pictures, with first some images of the people involved:

While other people store their watches in a safe, obviously Mike Wood keeps them in the fridge ! Those plastic bags have now become Mike’s trademark at every meeting ;-)

Bernhard is removing the Comex watches from their plastic bags…but there are so many of them in Mike’s collection !

That’s Steve comparing the size of a Sea Dweller and a Daytona…two Rolex legendary pieces in expert hands…

Now Mike is having a closer look at my Paul Newman Daytona…is that close enough ?

Michael examining a Daytona

Michael is the creator of the red Submariner website. This gentleman has been one of the first Rolex collector to create a website dedicated to some vintage Rolex pieces and he can be considered as partially responsible for my addiction to these watches !

Another picture of Mike Wood in heaven: the perfect outfit and the perfect watches….Mike is da man ;-)

If that's how people test the water tightness of Comex watches in the UK, remind me to never send them a watch for service ;-)

Now the watches...as usual there were almost too many of them to really appreciate the beauty of each rare example…

That’s not a Rolex, but a close cousin in the legendary divrers’ watches family…Steve’s one owner 1960’s Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Aqualung in all original condition

That’s Jed’s stunning 1969 Daytona ref. 6263 with a perfect Paul Newman dial. One of the most beautiful example that I have ever seen:

Doesn’t it look good on my wrist ? I definitely think so !

Another very rare piece: Steve’s Patent Pending double pink SD…yes the red writings on the dial have turned from red to pink over the years, and the Patent Pending is the very first batch of Sea Dwellers that was manufactures in the 1960’s. Steve has so many stories to tell about this watch !

Isn’t that the dream of any Rolex collector….a gorgeous foursome of vintage Rolex legendary watches put together: Paul Newman Daytona, Comex Submariner, Patent Pending Double Red Sea Dweller, Milsub,…

Some other watches…vintage Omega Speedmasters from the 1950’s and 1960’s, Rolex Submariner Big Crown, etc….

Thanks to all the friends involved, I'm sure that Bernhard will have some pictures to add...

About the Rolex Ref. 5514

The Rolex Submariner reference 5514 is a specialized variant of the Submariner line, produced exclusively for COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises), a French industrial deep-sea diving company. This reference is distinguished by its unique helium escape valve, integrated into the left side of the case, a feature not found on standard Submariner models of its era. It represents a purpose-built tool watch designed for professional saturation divers, setting it apart from other Submariner references intended for broader commercial release. Its limited production and specific client make it a notable piece within the brand's history of professional watches.

The case of the reference 5514 is crafted from stainless steel, typically measuring 40mm in diameter. It houses an automatic movement, likely the Rolex Caliber 1520 or 1530, known for its robustness and reliability. The watch is fitted with a Plexiglas crystal, consistent with Rolex sports models from the mid-20th century, providing durability and ease of maintenance in demanding environments. The helium escape valve is a key technical modification, allowing accumulated helium to escape during decompression without damaging the watch crystal.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in specialized Rolex tool watches and those with a focus on professional diving equipment. Its association with COMEX and the presence of the helium escape valve make it a distinct and highly sought-after model. Variants often include dials with the COMEX logo, further emphasizing its unique provenance. The 5514 occupies a specific niche, representing a period when Rolex collaborated directly with professional organizations to develop watches tailored for extreme conditions.
