TdotBean's original post captures the intense, almost maddening pursuit of a "unicorn" watch, a sentiment many collectors can relate to. His quest for a specific Rolex Double Red Sea-Dweller with a tropical brown dial highlights the emotional and often irrational side of high-end watch collecting. This piece explores the allure of rare vintage references and the lengths collectors will go to acquire them, even if it means disrupting their established collection themes.

I will be eating choco death until I found the right specimen.
The Rolex Reference 1665, known as the "Great White," is a specific iteration within its model family. This particular reference is distinct from the Reference 1680, which the collector notes as a separate model undergoing a makeover.
This example features a case described as being in good condition. The movement is a caliber 1570. The dial is a servicedial with Luminova, marked as a Tritium dial.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking specific variations within the Rolex lineup. The presence of a servicedial with Luminova, marked as Tritium, is a notable characteristic for those interested in dial variations.
...as an amazing mk2, Tyler, in perfect shape, a lil' more brown than black to my eyes. beautiful subject. ciao
The pain is greater when I can't have it. Regards Tyler
You must believe in the Unicorn. HAGWE Bill Rolex 1680 Red Submariner 'Tropical' Brown dial and insert.
I take back all the good thing I said about you. LOL. A '67 sample? ... ...still learning here. Regards Tyler
The red sub 1680 with a MK II dial. They were notorious for tuning brown. There was a very specific characteristic dial that had this behavior. If you see a feet first that is brown it is suspect. I may be wrong but I have never seen one in person. The sweet spot was somewhere between 2.2 mill and 2.4 mil serials after that you move to the border of feet first +/- 2.5 mil case number. Jump in Tyler the water is warm. HAGWE Bill
If Baron lets me play with it earlier in May... I can understand your obsession, Tyler. There are watches which are worth some big sacrifices, in Life. This one haunts my nights, too. MK II Thin Case Brown Dial... That is its name. Aaah, by the way, I am not sure I have ever said what you wrote... Best, Nicolas This message has been edited by amanico on 2012-04-26 23:12:41
