hs111 shares the culmination of a multi-year hunt for a specific vintage Rolex, the Explorer II Ref. 1655. This post captures the passion of vintage collecting, detailing the criteria for finding the 'right one'β€”from case condition to dial patina. It celebrates the unique charm of this 'un-Rolex' Rolex, offering a glimpse into the joy of acquiring a long-sought-after reference.

Friends, Several of you know some of the Rollies of my modest
collection. Some moderns, some really nice Vintages, which
have their own spell. (1675, 6542, 5513, 1680 and 6610 to name some..).

The variable & diverse appeal, due to the conditions of the
dial, and even more of the dial & index patina, often render a magic
appeal & winning charm.

While being in the lucky situation, owning some Subs & also GMTs,
one specific Reference had been elusive to me for a number of years:
The Explorer 1655, which I consider almost an "un-Rolex" Rolex,
couldn't be sourced by me for at least 4 years..

Yes, I had seen some, either in not so good condition, or
with almost no patina at all, ( which I love) or if they had a nice appeal,
some very few even with Box & papers, they were often way over
my dedicated budget.

Quite recently, after a long hunt, a collector - friend gave me
a call, letting me know, that a personal friend of him was
considering selling his personal one for a fair price.

After being checked by my friend, it had turned out,
that "my" 1655 might had been found:

A great case, fat and with some bevels left, a well kept bracelet,
a superb dial with puffy yellow/orange indices,
changing their hue & touch of color depending on inside or
outside light conditions and the angle of viewing..

Although still pretty much in the upper parts of my budget,
I indeed had found my "Right 1655" and really was in love
pretty much head over heals.

Thus, pls find here my good & lucky new start into this year of 2017.
It renders a Serial of 3,18M xxx, which together with the inner case
engraving, concordantly puts it into II / 1972..

So I just thought to share this first arrival of the year into
my stables.

Without further ado, now here my new Rolex love, a Reference
which I had been searching for some recent years..

Find here a little Collage from all sides.

Explorer II Ref 1655 - My first new "old" pleasure for 2017

My real recent big pleasure and so nice addition into my stables.

What a nice start into the New Year !

Cheers & Best,
hs. smile smile

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513

The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 is a notable example within the Submariner line, distinguished by its two-line dial and lack of a date complication. Produced for an extended period, it represents a core offering for collectors seeking a straightforward and robust tool watch. Its design emphasizes legibility and functionality, aligning with the original purpose of the Submariner series. This reference is recognized for its consistent aesthetic throughout its production run, with subtle variations in dial text and bezel inserts.

The watch features a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, offering durability and water resistance suitable for its intended use. Powering the reference 5513 is the automatic Caliber 1520 movement, known for its reliability. The crystal is acrylic, contributing to the vintage character of the watch. The unidirectional rotating bezel, typically with an aluminum insert, allows for elapsed time measurement.

For collectors, the reference 5513 is a significant model due to its long production history and the various dial iterations, such as gilt and matte dials, which present distinct collecting opportunities. Its appeal lies in its foundational design and its position as a non-date Submariner, making it a desirable piece for those who appreciate the model's original form. The watch is often paired with an Oyster bracelet, completing its functional aesthetic.
