Since seeing and greatly admiring CFS’s new reference 116000 36mm in blue with its distinctive dial last May I have been wrestling with myself about buying a new Rolex, let alone a new watch. For years I have not wanted a Rolex, which manufacturer every non-purist seems to gravitate to when considering a “good” watch. I also abhor “bling” on my wrist.
Recently on this forum is the debate about how many watches a purist should possess. My small collection of 26 mostly vintage watches, which does however include a small Rolex, albeit one art-deco style from 1930’s just back from its very lengthy service, only has about 7 or 8 of more modern watches that are regularly worn on rotation as daily wearers. Most of my collection was acquired from auctions and a few dealers. I last bought a brand new watch as long as over 30 years ago!
I have just pulled the trigger on this my 27th addition, which I now share although you have better pictures from CFS. Apart from the Celini, I think this is as understated a Rolex as one can buy. My third blue dial, no date, no rotatable but plain bezel, mixed Arabic and bar indexes, my first free-sprung movement and an extremely comfortable bracelet. I am a little surprised the crystal is flat rather than slightly domed, which seems a bit dated. Maybe this is my last watch acquisition?
Although I have several bracelet watches, I prefer leather straps where possible and now have a dilemma for some purists’ advice please. I have access to a matching blue croc strap to fit this watch. Should I now fit one, where I think it will likely to make this Rolex even more understated or is the bracelet really part and parcel of this overall deal? Two different AD’s have already given me very opposing views!

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 reference 116000 represents a core offering within the brand's foundational collection. This particular reference features a black dial configuration in the 36mm case size, positioning it as a mid-sized option within the Oyster Perpetual range.
The watch houses an automatic movement within a 36mm Oystersteel case construction. Technical specifications include a sapphire crystal and 100-meter water resistance rating. The design incorporates a smooth bezel treatment, creating an unadorned profile that emphasizes the dial presentation.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking a straightforward mechanical timepiece without additional complications or specialized features. The black dial variant offers a classic color option within the series, while the 36mm case dimension provides versatility for different wrist sizes. The smooth bezel configuration distinguishes this reference from rotating bezel variants elsewhere in the brand's catalog.
I would keep this watch on its bracelet. I am not a fan of bracelets, but in this case, I find it timeless and very good looking. It was about time for you to get your " first " Rolex. Best, Nicolas
Wear it in the best of health. Baxter
