DivingT shares his excitement about acquiring a Rolex Red Submariner Ref. 1680, marking his first vintage Rolex after years of collecting Blancpain divers. His post highlights the allure of vintage Rolex and the immediate connection collectors feel with these iconic timepieces, making it a relatable read for anyone embarking on a new collecting journey.
Hi all,
After a lot of years collecting vintage divers - mainly Blancpains, and even though I wear a 16600 as my regular daily beater, this is the first vintage Rolex for me - and beautiful 1680 Red Submariner! I'm very pleased with it - I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and its been on my wrist for it all!!!

I removed the bracelet when it arrived, and put on this lovely soft black leather NATO - very comfortable, and gives a very purposeful look.

The Rolex Submariner reference 1680 is notable as the first Submariner model to feature a date complication, marking a significant evolution for the line. Introduced in the late 1960s, it bridged the gap between the earlier no-date Submariners and later iterations, offering enhanced functionality while retaining the robust characteristics of the professional tool watch. This reference is distinguished by its single cyclops date magnifier on the crystal, a feature that would become a hallmark of many subsequent Rolex models.
This reference typically features a 40mm steel case, housing the self-winding Caliber 1575 movement. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The crystal is acrylic, commonly referred to as Plexiglas, contributing to its vintage aesthetic. Water resistance for the 1680 is rated at 200 meters, consistent with its design as a reliable underwater instrument.
For collectors, the reference 1680 is highly sought after, particularly early examples with "Red Submariner" dials where the word "Submariner" is printed in red. These variants represent a distinct period in Rolex's production history and are prized for their rarity and aesthetic appeal. The 1680 appeals to those who appreciate the blend of historical significance, functional design, and the tangible qualities of vintage Rolex manufacturing.
really good watch, MK5 if i'm correct, beautiful patina. thanks for sharing. chris
The bevels are still neat, and the patina of the indexes is like I love them... And yes, these Vintage Rolex are highly addictive... you'll see. All the best, my friend. Nicolas
The fact that you have her strapped on a leather Nato shows you are fully under her spell. Great watch that will bring you great joy. Vintage.... what can I say... timeless. Enjoy the beast. Bill
but worth the wait. cheers Tony
red subs rule and this is a great example !
Exactly - the patina is what really caught me with this one - hands and indexes matching in colour. and yes, the edges (and infact the whole case), it is clear its been a) looked after previously, and b) underwent good case maintenance / finishing when in for its last service. I love it! Cheers Tony
