Nicolas (amanico) shares his profound appreciation for the Rolex Submariner 5508, highlighting its distinct elegance derived from the absence of crown guards. His detailed observations on its flawless dial, correct insert, and overall case condition offer a compelling argument for its refined aesthetic, positioning it as a sophisticated alternative to the more robust 'Big Crown' models. This article delves into why the 'Small Crown' Submariner continues to captivate collectors.

I have a huge love for that Submariner, which I find more elegant without crownguards.

Its flawless dial, a correct insert, a not so bad case... This watch has everything to please me.

The next best thing after a big crown. Even though it doesn't play in the same category. The Big Crown ( Rolex and Tudor ) being more macho, the Small Crown being more refined.

Best,

Nicolas

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5508

The Rolex Submariner reference 5508 represents the No Date series within the Submariner model range. Produced from 1958 to 1962, this reference is distinguished by its black dial that has developed spider patina over time.

The 5508 features a 37mm stainless steel case fitted with an acrylic crystal and rotating bezel. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters. The automatic Cal. 1530 movement provides 42-48 hours of power reserve. The watch is paired with a steel bracelet.

This reference appeals to collectors focused on vintage Submariner variants from the late 1950s and early 1960s production period. The spider patina dial condition represents a specific aging characteristic that develops over decades. Within the No Date Submariner lineup, the 5508 occupies the position of a four-year production run reference with the Cal. 1530 movement.

The small crown Submariner truly is a refined one. I think it can't even be compared with Big Crown, as Big Crown truly is special, but small crown has its own beauty and charm as it is special in its on way. Here's mine, a slightly more colourful one with a couple of extra lines Best, Sam

I was very tempted by the outgoing SeaDweller model as I just adore the bezel. But when I see these older models, there really is no comparison. So I prefer to go that route for a Rolex, and when I do, I have lots of experts here to help choose

The first step will be to identify to the target model, and then begin the search. I have a few other things cooking, I need to free up one of the burners for this project, so to speak

A few months ago I actually saw someone wearing one in the wild. I looked at his watch and he looked at mine and it was almost as if we know each other. He is a small time dealer in my state. We exchanged telephone numbers and have stayed in touch by text. I love the watch world 👍
