Those who know me or who have read various threads will know that finding the perfect 5512 2-line gilt has been something of an issue for me. I have been looking for one for some time. Each time that I come close, something happens that prevents me getting this watch. Now, the 5512 is a very big gap in my collection and filling that gap has become a focus. Let me be clear, finding a 5512 2-line gilt is not a problem. I could find 3 by tomorrow. However, finding the perfect 5512 or at least one that is perfect to me is more of a problem. This thread is about how this hunt came to a conclusion.

A week or so ago, I made some comment about how fabulous one of Bill's Subs was. I then received a PM from one of the regulars here....lets call him Ken. Now Ken has a reputation for having some essentially flawless and wonderful watches. Ken and I have exchanged emails quite a few times, but this time Ken tells me of a 5512 2-line gilt that he had seen that used to belong to Marcello Pisani. To those who don't know him, Marcello is something of a Rolex legend. I would bet Marcello has better records on Rolex than Rolex. Ken tells me that Marcello owned the watch for 6-7 years sold his watch a few years ago but that the owner now may be looking to sell....and that I should contact Marcello as he would be able to verify the watch and contact who he sold it to a few years ago. Well, I did....and Marcello said that the watch was in superb condition. When Ken and Marcello both suggest a watch is mint, chances are.....

Well, after a few emails and a few scans....guess what happens.....

Tuesday morning...06.15...i set off for the airport....

Arrive at the airport...plane is on time....but we are early for the Genoa flight

I said "we" as I thought it would be nice to spend some time in Italy with Mrs. Baron.

Finally...arrived......

But, no sooner had we arrived than it was time to meet a certain Italian......Down in the lobby was Marcello..... We have a drink or two....and chat about watches in general and what we like. We had a really enjoyable chat.......always great to meet fellow collectors...especially ones who have such great reputations. Marcello, it was a great privilege to meet!

And then Marcello passed over the 5512...my 5512. Lets start with some of the unexpected bonuses.....I wasn't expecting it to be on its original bracelet....but it was....a Gay Freres riveted bracelet stamped 1.62...within a quarter of the inside caseback. Wow.

But not only was it on the GF bracelet, take a look at the buckle. Now to me, I would not have realized this was something quite special. But Marcello said to him this was extremely special and very unusual on a Submariner. Would love to hear from anyone on this as need to research some.....

But what about the 5512? Well, what i can say is that it is almost impossible to capture the flawless mirror-like state of the dial. It is literally like a mirror. Some various shots.....

Did I mention the exclam?

Look at those crown guards and that case....just minty to my eyes.

Scratches are on plexi...not dial....

The lume has turned a gentle gold colour....very alluring. Hands lume matching perfectly to the lume on the dial. Just superb to my eye. The contrast between the blackness of the dial and the lume is fantastic.

I am truly delighted with my catch. So, to celebrate......on with a flowery shirt and off to Marcello's suggested authentic Genovese restaurant.....

Nobody does Pesto Pasta like the Genovese....just superb.

We spend a couple of days in  Genova, enjoying the local cuisine and the local sights. But I seem to relate so much to my 5512.....When in a wonderful church, my wife says....look at that gilt....

I, of course, look at the dial of my watch and not the gilt in the church.

Walking down the narrow and cobbled streets, I pass this poster. Does it not remind you of someone? I am thinking he has a 6542 on his wrist....eh?

The Genovese were superb. The people were warm, friendly and the food was superb. There is a great sense of humour here.....

To Ken, thank you for your part in helping this hunt come to fruition. Marcello, it was great to meet you and have such an interesting chat about watch-world. As for my new 5512, well, I guess it goes without saying that I love it.  Truly love it. To me, this trip captures a lot about what I love in watch collecting. Meeting new people. Visiting new places. Spending time with people one loves. Trying new foods. and finding new friends. Oh, and catching killer watches!!

No doubt i will write a proper thread about the 5512 and why it is so significant to me for my collection, but this post is meant to be about the fun of the hunt and what fun watch collecting can be. We had a ball.

Italy, my friend, is like Heaven. Great guys, superb places, fine restaurants, and, very often, nice, very nice watches... As for the watch, you bought the seller, and a great one. Bravo, I can't wait to see it in the lfesh, no... better... To feel it! As for the poster, I don't see who you have in mind... ;) Best, my friend, welcome back here, and,of course, huuuuge congratulations! Nicolas

The watch looks and feels new. Marcello had it for 6-7 years and said wore it just a few times. Its next owner had it in the safe almost the whole time. It looks and feels new...the case is just perfect.
