I remember it well. I was 10 when I first watched a James Bond movie. It was in 1984 and Roger Moore was the current Bond. But the first Bond I watched was an early Bond with a man called Sean Connery. It was Thunderball. I still think today it is the best Bond movie that was ever made. By far. After that I asked my friend which other movies Mr. Connery played in. I was only interested in watching those. Dr No. From Russia with Love. Goldfinger. Those four* movies would move me in a way that no other future film would do. Well what does a DB4 have to do with JB? And what is the link with the 6536-1? Yes it is a so called 'James Bond' Rolex. No crown guard. But it is not a big crown most often associated with Bond (the 6538 & 5510). This a teaser. The full post I am still working on and it will be posted shortly.

Have a great weekend. And enjoy the upcoming auctions in Geneva. Should be interesting.

Best Edmond

*Connery also played many years later in another Bond called Diamonds are Forever.

About the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538

The Submariner reference 6538 is recognized for its prominent crown and lack of crown guards, a characteristic shared with early Submariner iterations. This reference represents a significant period in the development of the Submariner line, preceding later designs that incorporated more protective features for the winding crown. It is often distinguished by its larger crown compared to other early Submariner models, contributing to its distinct visual profile within the collection.

This particular reference features a stainless steel case measuring 37 mm in diameter, housing an automatic movement, the caliber 1030. The watch is fitted with an acrylic crystal and offers a water resistance rating of 200 meters. The power reserve for the caliber 1030 is approximately 42 hours. The dial is black, and the watch is equipped with a rotating unidirectional aluminum bezel.

For collectors, the reference 6538 is notable for its early production characteristics and its place in the evolution of the Submariner. Its specific design elements, such as the 'big crown' and absence of crown guards, make it a point of interest for those studying the progression of the model. Variants within this reference may include different dial texts or bezel insert types, which are often points of detailed examination for enthusiasts.

But there are many superb no crownguard Subs, small or big crown, being in the Rolex or the Tudor Collection. ;) Best, Nicolas

No one can really 100% confirm that Nicolas. There is much debate wether it was the 6538 or the 5510. No one is 100% sure about this, we can only speculate that it might have been a 6538. Provide us with the evidence and I will let this issue rest ;) Best Edmond

People say the 5510 lume plot at six oclock would have been lighter. This is NOT the case with the 6538. Is this the evidence you are referring to?

Have a lok at several 5510s, with a correct dial... You will see. Best, Nicolas

The next one is Thunderball. Perhaps the best Bond ever made. These four are the best Bonds ever. After Thunderball Sean Connery got annoyed at playing Bond. It was never to be the same anymore. Enjoy time with your son watching those movies. I am looking forward to do that too one day ;)
