KC74 reflects on the enduring legacy of the Rolex Submariner, drawing parallels between its resilience and the "There Is No Finish Line" philosophy. This post explores the Submariner's iconic status, its widespread appeal across diverse wearers, and its reputation for durability and timeless design.
I was walking around wearing a t shirt which resembles the Yellow Jersey of Tour de France. My wife calls me the Banana Man because of its yellow color. Yes, i was the Banana Man at the shopping mall today. I was also wearing my current favorite watch. This t shirt has an interesting tagline "There Is No Finish Line". It was Nike's tagline first developed in the early 90's. It was a test to the human spirits, pushing your own limits and boundaries. Will power. "Just Do It" kind of attitude. Nike is an American Icon.
When one talks about Tour de France, there is one man in the cycling world worth mentioning. He was stricken with cancer and went on to win the Tour de France 7 times. He was the real "Banana Man". Lance Armstrong. An Icon in the cycling world. A man with an iron will a hundred times stronger than a mere mortal.
I started thinking to myself when associations were made with the yellow jersey, the tagline, the cyclist, and my watch. Its all about competing with one's will, limits, pushing expectations. This watch of mine has been produced in the millions, affordable and yet not exorbitantly expensive to own one, simple, its current look is still very much classic looking although it has undergone changes, it has revolutionize itself, its predecessors now command premiums in the rare vintage market with wordings such as Red, Double Red, COMEX, with seriel numbers starting 6xxx which can be confusing. Priceless.
Millions of people wear this watch, from actors, legendary cyclist such as Lance Armstrong spotted with a Daytona or his GMT, from celebrities to politicians, revolutionaries, every man, heads of states, teenagers, a watch which may not require a service or repair with 30 years of wear, a watch which can take a beating, impact, shocks, a fall, or physically used in the harshest conditions.
Other brands may ponder on its popularity, a watch so common, and yet with continuous history of more than 50 years, a watch made famous by screen legends, its popularity can be astounding. No other watch can come close to it in terms of its strength, character, popularity and its status as the watch. It has stood the test of time when the watch world was introduced with other competiting brands and models with similar offerings or functions. No other brands evoke such emotions in the masses compared to this one. It goes about doing what it does best with little worry about its other competitors. It is an Icon on its own merits. This watch may not have a finish line. Its pursuit may never be ending.
There Is No Finish Line. The Banana Man and the watch. The Submariner.

The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 is a notable example within the Submariner line, distinguished by its two-line dial and lack of a date complication. Produced for an extended period, it represents a core offering for collectors seeking a straightforward and robust tool watch. Its design emphasizes legibility and functionality, aligning with the original purpose of the Submariner series. This reference is recognized for its consistent aesthetic throughout its production run, with subtle variations in dial text and bezel inserts.
The watch features a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, offering durability and water resistance suitable for its intended use. Powering the reference 5513 is the automatic Caliber 1520 movement, known for its reliability. The crystal is acrylic, contributing to the vintage character of the watch. The unidirectional rotating bezel, typically with an aluminum insert, allows for elapsed time measurement.
For collectors, the reference 5513 is a significant model due to its long production history and the various dial iterations, such as gilt and matte dials, which present distinct collecting opportunities. Its appeal lies in its foundational design and its position as a non-date Submariner, making it a desirable piece for those who appreciate the model's original form. The watch is often paired with an Oyster bracelet, completing its functional aesthetic.
I'm not a big specialist about this specific sport, but of course I know Lance Armstrong. I see the parallel between him and the Sub, even if, for the Sub, things didn't end yet. Nice text, you should just make some paragraphs, in my opinion. Best, Nicolas.
Beating competitors is easy..beating yourself is hard
Why try to beat oneself? Be gentle to oneself, improve, learn through feelings, seeing, hearing, progress oneself through understanding of oneself and others.....Why try to beat oneself??? ??!! from Down Under Francois
Know yourself, know your enemy, and 100 wars will be won- Chinese Axiom
One can never beat oneself..... but one can better oneself.....Old sage Axiom From Down Under Kind regards Francois
..may sound harsh. Beating oneself means giving your best shot! Only give up when we have tried hard enough, its not about being physical. It happened that the Tour de France legend had to endure physical determination and strength in order to win his competitors. We need not to. For me, its more mental than physical. To me, no matter how big or small a task is, we do it to our best ability. Yes, we need to learn from our mistakes and those who are around us. We continue learning. Its about beat
