Aquaracer1, a seasoned collector, sparks a vital discussion on evolving wristwear preferences as he re-evaluates his 40mm Rolex Submariner. His candid reflection on the 'maxi case' design and its perceived bulkiness, especially compared to his 39mm divers, resonates with many who find their ideal watch size shifting over time. This thread delves into the nuanced debate of comfort, aesthetics, and the enduring appeal of iconic references versus personal fit.

Now that I’m 45, I tend to favor slightly smaller watches, like 38 mm is really the sweet spot for me these days. I woke up this morning and asked myself, is my 40 mm Sub (with maxi case) too bulky for my 7 inch wrist??

I don’t feel this fitment issue with my other two 39 mm divers, BB58 and SeaQ.

So now I’m asking myself, perhaps there is a Sub 2 liner in my future, or if I should trade Sub for something smaller altogether…

I have been enjoying this piece for several years, and it’s my oldest watch, but it gets the least wrist time, as these days I’m feeling it wears a bit large and uncomfortable…

I’d love to hear a new perspective, if the Purists would be so kind to weigh in with their feedback?

About the Rolex Submariner No-Date Ref. 114060

The Rolex Submariner reference 114060 represents a significant evolution of the no-date Submariner line, introduced in 2012. This reference is distinguished by its ceramic bezel insert and the "Maxi Case," which features broader lugs and crown guards compared to previous generations, giving it a more substantial presence on the wrist while retaining the classic 40mm diameter. It succeeded the reference 14060M and brought modern material science and design updates to a beloved tool watch. This model is notable for its clean, symmetrical dial, free of a date window and cyclops lens.

This reference features a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from 904L stainless steel, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance. The case houses the Rolex Caliber 3130, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, offering a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The watch is fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 300 meters (1,000 feet), secured by a Triplock winding crown. The unidirectional rotatable bezel is equipped with a black Cerachrom insert, made from a hard, corrosion-resistant ceramic.

For collectors, the 114060 is appreciated for its blend of traditional Submariner aesthetics with contemporary robustness and materials. It appeals to those who prefer the uncluttered look of a no-date dial and the enhanced durability of a ceramic bezel. Its production run from 2012 to 2020 makes it a relatively modern reference, yet it is now discontinued, having been replaced by the 41mm reference 124060. This reference is often considered a modern classic, bridging the gap between vintage proportions and contemporary Rolex engineering.

I tend to agree although I have mostly tried for smaller watches.

Mine sits flat on the wrist. But these do seem bulky. It is a great watch. The think bezel doesn’t help in this regard. I’ve debating moving my sub but it’s a great all arounder

Thanks for your comments TCF

If you moved it, what would you consider that is less bulky and smaller?

It’s a classic icon, undoubtedly

And I have always said I’d regret giving it up. Perhaps the happy medium is 2 liner Sub. Appreciate your reply

Most comfortable sports options are Daytona, GMT, and yacht master IMO. And, as you mention, older sub references.
