Hi,

Paid a visit to a Rolex boutique this weekend to try on the 116234 Datejust 1 in stainless steel/white with white gold fluted bezel . By coincidence tried on the new yacht-master steel platinum 116622 with dark rhodium dial, which had been launched this year.

Somehow I hadn't noticed the launch of this particular Yacht-Master model but  the watch really blew me away:

1. The sunburst dark rhodium dial is beautiful and interesting as the angle of the light changes. Also refreshingly different form the black, silver and blue dials that I often see
2. The blue seconds hand provides great contrast to the dial
3. The platinum bezel, while somewhat "flashy", combines well with the dial and steel bracelet, turning the watch into a combination of different shades of silver, grey etc. which is interesting, not too "contrasty" yet not at all boring
4. Finally, and this might be just my own perception but, the lugs width seems narrower compared to the Sub, contributing to the comfort on my (skinny) writs.

After my visit to the boutique I wanted to learn more about the watch online and I was somewhat surprised how little information there is on this watch - almost all reviews and information relate either to the new black/gold model or the existing blue dial 116622 or the platinum dial version that in my understanding may be discontinued. I would be keen to hear your views on the watch and why it seems to be mostly ignored. I appreciate that YM doesn't perhaps feature among the most sought after Rolex models with its "shiny" bits and price premium vs. Sub or GMT Master II but still, to me it seems like this particular model would deserve far more attention! What am I missing?

Regards,
Mika

About the Rolex Datejust Ref. 116234

The Rolex Datejust reference 116234 represents a contemporary iteration of the classic Datejust, characterized by its combination of Oystersteel and an 18k white gold fluted bezel. This reference is part of the six-digit Datejust series, which introduced updated case proportions and bracelets while retaining the fundamental design language of the model line. It offers a versatile aesthetic, suitable for various occasions, and is a staple within the Rolex catalog for those seeking a blend of precious metal and robust construction.

This particular reference features a 36 mm Oystersteel case, housing the automatic caliber 3135 movement, known for its reliability and precision. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial, ensuring durability and legibility. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear and light water activities.

Collectors often appreciate the 116234 for its wide array of dial options, including the distinctive tuxedo or bullseye dials, which offer a unique visual appeal compared to more traditional Datejust configurations. The choice between an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet further allows for personalization, catering to different preferences for sportiness or dressiness. This reference appeals to those who value the enduring design of the Datejust but with the subtle enhancements of a modern production period.

Terve Mika,

In my opinion this one together with the blue dial YM are among the very nicest Rolex. It's a great watch and pay attention how much nicer finish the case has than e.g. Submariner. finally, even YM is partly polished, it does not scream "Rolex, Rolex!!" on the wrist. Best, Kari

Tervepa terve!

Fully agree on the "niceness" without screaming Rolex. Hadn't fully appreciated the finishing point though vs. submariner - what were you referring to exactly? Any thoughts on the resale value (I know, I know, if you want to invest, buy stocks but bear with me) and the seemingly low demand?

Hahaa!

Mika, don't invest to UK stock - watches must be a better investment. If you tale a look at the lugs and sides of the case, everything is rounded. I think YM is not an "investment piece" but together with Daytona, it is among the nicest Rolex watches. Best, Kari

Hi Mika

I have the blue dial version and absolutely love it! My only complaint is that the bezel is a scratch magnet=( Otherwise, a great watch! J

scratches

Hadn't realised that (re: scratches), somewhat concerning as I wouldn't want to be scared of wearing the watch! Would you say more or less easily scratched than aluminium?

I'm not sure about aluminium...

Basically, scratches are quite prominent because of the sand blasted finish on the bezel. Not a deal breaker for me though=)
