In this concluding installment of his multi-part series, samwan presents a curated selection of 'Time Only' watches from his exceptional collection. This article delves into the nuanced world of two and three-handed timepieces, showcasing how simplicity can embody profound horological artistry. Samwan's meticulous categorization and stunning photography offer a rare glimpse into the diverse expressions of time-only watchmaking, from independent artisans to established manufactures.

Over the past couple of days, I posted several threads of my timepieces categorized by

- Tourbillon
- Perpetual Calendars
- Chronographs
- Travler/GMT
- Moon phases
- Power Reserve

Here are the rest of my watches:

For the purpose of this post, 'Time Only' means two-handed or three-handed watches without any other complication. It may include decorated, skeletonized or sem-skeletonized dials, sweeping or jumping seconds, or movements including a fusee chain.

Without further ado:

I have two confessions to make:

1. I have, sadly, parted with several of the above pieces, albeit some with a little regret...

2. This more or less wraps up 90% of my collection. There are a few unaccounted for - Richard Mille RM 23, Patek 5153 (London Exhibition), Cartier Day & Night, Habring Jumping Seconds, Gronefeld 1941 Remontoire plus a couple of diving watches (IWC Deep Two, Pam 46 alarm, Seiko Dundam). Perhaps I will make a post later when I take better pictures or come up with a common enough theme.

All said, these posts have taken up a week of my time during the boring lock down and I am happy to have organised my photo library in a more systematic way,

Until my next post, I hope everyone will stay healthy amidst this horrible pandemic

All the best
Sam

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 5089

The Patek Philippe Reference 5089 is a series of Rare Handcrafts timepieces, often produced in extremely limited editions or as unique pieces. These references are distinguished by their intricate decorative arts, such as enameling, engraving, or marquetry, applied to the dial or case. They represent Patek Philippe's commitment to preserving traditional artisanal techniques within contemporary watchmaking, positioning them as highly collectible examples of decorative horology rather than standard production models.

These timepieces typically feature a precious metal case, often white gold or rose gold, housing a self-winding mechanical movement. The specific caliber varies depending on the individual execution, but it is always finished to Patek Philippe's exacting standards. The crystal is consistently sapphire, providing clear visibility of the meticulously crafted dial. Water resistance is generally modest, reflecting the artistic nature of the watch rather than its utility in demanding environments.

Collector relevance for the 5089 series stems from its extreme rarity and the unique artistic expression each piece embodies. These watches appeal to collectors who prioritize artisanal craftsmanship and exclusivity, often seeking out specific themes or decorative techniques. The 2019 collection for Hausmann & Co.'s 225th anniversary, for example, highlights the potential for bespoke creations and regional tributes within this reference family, further enhancing their desirability and historical significance.

and as a lover of time only watches, I had to go through your post twice to ogle at your remarkable collection. But for me, one watch stood head and shoulders above the rest - the Patek Philippe with the wood marquetry dial. It is wood marquetry or am I hallucinating?! With the hinged back case, it is quite a watch in my opinion especially if one understands the amount of work that has gone into the dial. You take care Sam and thanks again!

This watch features marquetry art and the dial is made up of 166 pieces of wood. If you visit the top floor of the Patek Salon (where all the grand complications are displayed), there is a "painting" made up of marguetry art. I will send you a picture when I dig up the photo. Best Sam

The "paintings' behind us are the marquetry art

Here's my version, that I received in 2015. Is it still in your collection? Thanks again for a superb and impressive series of watches this past week! Enjoy.
