GWIS offers a compelling review of 'The Moonwalkers' exhibition at London's Lightroom, an immersive experience dedicated to the Apollo and Artemis missions. His detailed account highlights the unique presentation format and Tom Hanks's pivotal role in bringing this spectacular documentary to life. This article explores why this exhibition, featuring remastered NASA footage and a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra score, is a must-see for space enthusiasts and watch collectors alike, especially those keen to spot an Omega Speedmaster in its natural habitat.

Yesterday we visited The Moonwalkers exhibition at the Lightroom in London and I highly recommend it for those of you who visit London and have an interest in the Apollo missions.

Lightroom is an immersive arts exhibition space, which basically means it’s a very large room with an awesome sound system and the ability to simultaneously project images onto all 4 walls and the floor.

Tom Hanks attended a Lighroom exhibition of the work of the British artist, David Hockney. He was so impressed by the venue that he suggested to the owners that they should use the venue to do an exhibition on the moon landings. They said that they would do it, but only if Tom worked with them on it  with them  (l assume Tom has pretty good connections with NASA!). The result is a wonderfully entertaining  and beautifully produced 50 minute documentary on the Apollo moon landings and the new Artemis missions, with a recorded narration by Tom Hanks and background music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

NASA footage, including some of the images recently remastered by image specialist Andy Saunders, are projected on to the large walls and floor and the result is that you get a much better sense of being on the moon and the vastness of space. My quick pictures obviously can’t do justice to the scale of the exhibition space and the spectacle of these images, but trust me when I say they look simply awe inspiring when seen at Lightroom!! This exhibition was originally going to end in April, but it must be popular because it’s been extended until October.

All the best,

Jon

Your friends may already of heard about it since it received quite a lot of publicity in December when the exhibition opened. Tom Hanks was over here publicising it on TV and in the press.

I saw an interview with Tom Hanks and he was asked why Moonwalkers was being shown in London and he explained that it was purely because of this venue and its audio visual system, but I imagine there must be something like it in the US, e.g. the Sphere venue in Las Vegas - which looks amazing.

Looking at the moon footage with some VR might be another great option.
