Miles_151, a seasoned collector, shares his journey with the original Tudor Black Bay references, specifically the 79220 series. His perspective offers valuable insight into how these watches reignited his interest in Tudor and provided a refreshing collecting experience amidst the increasing difficulty of acquiring other luxury brands. This article explores the enduring appeal of the 79220 models and their place in a modern collection.

When Tudor launched the black bay in 2012 it pricked my interest in the brand having never really being a Tudor fan over the last 35 years of collecting.
I was a few years late coming to the party and bought my first Tudor the 79220n. I loved this watch and wore it often and loved its modern approach to a vintage problem.
With all the benefits of a modern watch with a node back to its history. The ETA movement and rose logo dial with the Smiley script all appealed to my taste.
Roll on nearly a decade and my interest in Tudor has continued. The timing for me was probably good as this was at a time when Rolex and Patek started to become so difficult to obtain. I was made to feel like I should be gifting my kidneys or some other vital organ to my AD as a thank you for the several hundred thousand pounds I’d spent with them. The feel with Tudor was completely different and reminded me of how it once was with both of my favourite watch houses.
It has taken me until now to find the original line up which I always wanted to do.
Future collectable or just great watches? Either way I really enjoy wearing these 79220’s
So here are my 79220r, 79220b and 79220n. Funny how they came to me in reverse order to how they were launched.
These watches ground me and remind me that you don’t have to wear the latest hyped watch to get a great deal of satisfaction on your wrist.
Happy Friday Amigos and hope you all have a great weekend.

About the Rolex Black Bay Ref. 79220R

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Ref. 79220R represents the inaugural release of the Heritage Black Bay line, launched in 2012. This model was instrumental in re-establishing Tudor's identity as a manufacturer of robust and historically-inspired tool watches, drawing heavily on design cues from its dive watch heritage while forging a distinct path from its parent company.

This reference features a 41mm stainless steel case with a polished and satin finish, housing the ETA 2824 self-winding mechanical movement. It is characterized by its burgundy unidirectional rotating bezel, gilt accents on the matte black dial, and 'snowflake' hands. The watch is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal and a screw-down crown, ensuring water resistance. It was offered on either a stainless steel bracelet or a distressed leather strap, often accompanied by an additional fabric strap.

For collectors, the 79220R holds significance as the first iteration of the highly successful Black Bay series, notable for its ETA-based movement before the transition to in-house calibers. Its unique 'smiley' dial text and rose logo on the crown further distinguish it as a first-generation model, making it a key piece for those interested in the evolution of modern Tudor.

I owned a Submariner 79090 in the nineties and I liked it very much although it was still a watch looking for an identity, in my opinion. The Black Bay is a completely different story, does not need to rely upon any other watch even though it constantly reminds you that you're wearing an old Submariner from the fifties. And that's what I really like of those watches, they have their own identity and trigger memories. Enjoy them

What strap do you have the blue one on? I wouldn’t mind one for mine

just wearing my BB58 on NATO - and love my red bezel Black Bay as well. Though I have never understood the smiley thing - I am more for straight lines I must admit ;-)

Or also a difference in the case between your red bezel and mine?
