Max Says The Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver Is The New Black (and Yellow).

As some of you know, I am the proud owner of a new UN Maxi Marine. Off the top, I love everything about this piece, what with its black, ‘rubberized’ outer material that gives the watch a very rugged sensibility - making it impervious to most door jams. The core of the case is stainless steel which is then baked with a material known as “vulcanized rubber”, creating an almost ding-proof finish.  If you are an active person who bangs into stuff (or you have a girlfriend who tends to flail about without warning or reason), this is the watch for you.  I mean, this one’s supposed to be seaworthy, right?

Laid out on a black wavy patterned dial is a Power Reserve indicator at 12:00, a Seconds indicator at 6:00; and on the same subdial the date is displayed using a magnifier placed on the underside of the sapphire crystal.  The screw-down crown is firm and easy-to-grip, and allows for quick adjust of the date.  The Maxi Marine ships with an extra-long rubber strap that can fit around a medium-sized tree; it will most certainly require customizing to the wrist but once that is achieved it is very comfortable. I particularly like the ceramic link between the rubber strap and the lugs of the watch.  Not only is this a very nice touch, but it dramatically adds to the overall comfort and wear ability of the watch.     

The Maxi Marine Black Sea is Powered by the UN-26, an ETA 2892A2 (my apologies for a previous post where I erroneously referred to the UN-26 as all in-house), which Ulysse Nardin highly personalizes by decorating it consistent with a level to match its standards; including swirled Cotes de Geneve striping, circular graining, not to mention the custom UN rotor and black ceramic elements. UN further modifies the 2892 by adding its own movement module to display the 42-hour power reserve and allow for the relocation of the small seconds subdial.  There’s a little placard on the side of the case at 9:00 that reads, “No. 2139”, which I believe is a nod to the days when UN made ship’s chronometers.

Basically on my wrist since last Saturday, this Maxi is keeping near perfect time.  Referred to as ‘the bumble bee’, it has won strong favor from some of my toughest critics (like my girlfriend’s daughter, and my four-legger, Max), and is currently enjoying a lion share of the attention.
