DonCorson provides an in-depth look at URWERK's novelties from BaselWorld 2015, showcasing two distinct models: the UR-1001 and the UR-105TA. This report highlights URWERK's innovative approach to time display and material use, from a substantial 'table clock' with long-term indicators to a more wearable piece incorporating advanced plastics.
BaselWorld 2015 - URWERK
URWERK showed two new models this year, the UR-1001 and the UR-105TA.
The UR-1001 is more like a table clock than a watch, but it does include a demountable frame and strap for those who need to strengthen one arm.
The UR-1001 shows the time and the date with an URWERK typical satelites.
Along with the "oil change" indicator when it is time for a service, the watch also has 100 year and 1000 year counters. Enough for simple usage at home I guess.
Just the right size for a dainty female wrist. Althought large parts of the watch/clock are made in titanium the watch is surprisingly heavy.
Getting back to a more wearable size the UR-105TA is new with the use of new weight saving mterials, most notably plastic. The black top of the satellite carrier is made of machined PEEK. PEEK is a quit expensive plastic which has some remarkable properties is used very often as a even lighter replacement for aluminum. The satellites themselves are made of aluminum.
As we can see here the satellites can be had in other colors....
such as yellow and orange.
Wow! I love them!

About the Urwerk Ref. UR-1001
The Urwerk UR-1001, known as the "Zeit Device," represents a significant departure from traditional horology, even within Urwerk's innovative catalog. It is not a wristwatch but rather a pocket watch or desk clock, designed as a grand complication that tracks time on multiple scales, from seconds to a millennium. This reference showcases Urwerk's commitment to unconventional time displays and mechanical complexity, serving as a flagship demonstration of their engineering philosophy.
The UR-1001 features a substantial case crafted from titanium and steel, housing a complex manual-winding movement. The time is displayed through a combination of satellite indications, retrograde minutes, and digital jumping hours. Beyond standard time, it incorporates a perpetual calendar, a day/night indicator, and a "running reserve" indicator for the power reserve. Its large dimensions and intricate architecture are protected by a sapphire crystal, allowing for a clear view of the multi-layered dial.
This reference appeals to collectors seeking a unique and highly technical horological object that transcends the conventional wristwatch format. It stands as a testament to Urwerk's ability to push boundaries in mechanical timekeeping, offering a long-term perspective on time with its 100-year and 1000-year indicators. The UR-1001 is a limited production piece, underscoring its exclusivity and appeal to those interested in avant-garde independent watchmaking.

About the Horological Meandering Ref. UR-105TA
The UR-105TA, known as the "Turbine Automatic," represents a significant evolution within the UR-105 series, distinguishing itself with the integration of twin air turbines visible on the case back. These turbines are directly linked to the automatic winding system, allowing the wearer to regulate the winding efficiency. This feature provides a practical interaction with the movement, enabling adjustment for different activity levels, from full winding to a more controlled, slower winding rate, or even disengagement for manual winding only.
The watch features a distinctive satellite hour display, a hallmark of the brand, where the hours are indicated by rotating cubes that sweep across a minute track. The case is constructed from titanium and PVD-coated steel, offering a robust yet lightweight profile. The movement is self-winding, with the aforementioned turbine regulation system contributing to its technical complexity and user engagement. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, offering a clear view of the intricate time display.
This reference appeals to collectors who appreciate technical innovation and a departure from traditional time displays. The UR-105TA builds upon the established design language of the 105 line while introducing a novel functional element that enhances the wearer's interaction with the timepiece. Its distinctive aesthetic and mechanical ingenuity position it as a notable piece for those interested in contemporary independent watchmaking.
