Emmanuel, known as quattro on WatchProSite, presents an in-depth look at the Vacheron Constantin Métiers d'Art 'Mécaniques Gravées' ref. 1100A/000P-B026. His detailed post, featuring a comprehensive photo essay, highlights the exceptional hand-engraved mainplate and caliber of this 2015 SIHH release. This article delves into why this specific reference stands out within Vacheron Constantin's Métiers d'Art collection and how it compares to other haute horlogerie pieces.

Introduced in 2015 at SIHH, this Vacheron Constantin "Mécaniques Gravées" (engraved mechanics) ref. 1100A/000P-B026 is part of the Métiers d'Art collection and has a fully hand-engraved mainplate (serving as a dial) and caliber, decorated with floral motifs.

The 950 platinum case with rounded sides measures 39 x 8.5 mm and differs from those used in the Traditionnelle or Patrimony lines.

The watch is powered by caliber 4400/1, a version of the 4400 caliber used in the ref. 82172 (recently acquired here both by TeutonicCarFan and by kamdaswan) from which the small seconds display has been removed.

Lastly, the "Mécaniques Gravées" release comprised a second timepiece with a tourbillon, which is included in my thread from yesterday dedicated to Vacheron Constantin's tourbillon calibers.

Enjoy!

Best, Emmanuel

About the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-Retrograde Ref. 82172

The Patrimony Contemporaine Bi-Retrograde reference 82172 represents Vacheron Constantin's interpretation of retrograde complications within the Patrimony Contemporaine series. This reference distinguishes itself through its bi-retrograde function, offering dual retrograde displays on the dial face.

The watch features a 42.5mm case crafted in 18k rose gold with a fixed bezel configuration. A silver dial sits beneath sapphire crystal, while an automatic movement powers the complications. The case offers 30 meters of water resistance, positioning it for dress watch applications rather than sports usage.

Reference 82172 appeals to collectors seeking complicated dress watches with traditional precious metal construction. The 42.5mm case size accommodates contemporary sizing preferences while the rose gold case material and silver dial combination provides classical color coordination. The bi-retrograde complication adds mechanical interest beyond standard time display functions, targeting collectors who appreciate visible complications in formal timepieces.

I usually don't like open worked dials, but this one is, as you say, "an interesting mix"! Best, Emmanuel

Thanks for the post Emmanuel. I guess I should also thank Horobox for the outstanding pics. I was unaware of Horobox until now. M4

There was one up for sale recently and before I got my 82172 I thought hard about it. For me, the hands looked hard to read. I never saw this in person, however. What great things VC can do in their ateliers

content and photos sometimes. And this VC model is very special indeed and I find it more attractive than its tourbillon sibling. Cheers, Emmanuel

I still think your 82172 is just as fine or even better on a daily basis: a truly wonderful piece. Readability may be a little difficult on this engraved one, but when you have such a dial, I’m not sure if readability is a priority. Best, Emmanuel

So this can be considered a counterpart, or companion even better, to the Patek 5088p. Interesting matchup, although in general I believe VC’s Metiers d’Art capabilities are debatably a bit stronger than PP in certain areas, but they each seem to have their complementary areas of focus. Note: I’m not trying to start a debate, please.🙏🏽 Which do you like better, if you had to choose one? Myself, I don’t know if I could choose based on pictures. Seeing in the metal is necessary. Best case scenario
