I had recently a small ski accident this winter and fractured my shoulder; it had for consequence to partially put me out of commission and hence had to be traveling less and being more at home. Trying to find the positive side of life, this accident also meant in turns that I had more time to browse the vintage watch shops and auction house… and enabled me to find this rather rare piece, a Malte Chronograph made by Vacheron Constantin as a 30pieces Limited Edition for Dubail in Paris:

Having already a couple of more traditionelle VC pieces, I was looking for something more casual - crossing over between dress and sport. Based on a Lemania ebauche (Similar basis to the PP 5070 if I’m not mistaken?) the Malte Chrono is a nice manually wound chrono with a more casual look.

Overall a great addition to the collection and something which is not seen so often, a rather dressy manual wind chrono under a sporty guise (thanks to its bright red details).

While the piece is more on the larger side, the black dial make sure the watch appears smaller and it doesn’t become too overpowering. Also witn nice bevels on the lugs as with all Malte collection?

Currently still with its original strap, I have started to think at what I could add as strap next, reinforcing this unique casual chic vision: maybe a textured black calf leather with red stitching? Or a dark brown/chocolate gator with Bordeaux stitching? Or suede / nubuck? What do you think?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Cheers,

Jerome

I am a big fan of suede straps, so I would suggest a molequin suede, the quality is fantastic.

It’s sporty and technical looking at the same. Love the texture of the dial. As for a new strap-perhaps black alcantara??

Had also suede in mind - will post some pictures when I try it out. (Since it’s a 22mm at the lugs, Linz sue what exists)

Thanks for the idea of alcantara, it is a good one. Me wonders what our official „straps expert in residence“ will opine 🤣
