Dear all,

Here is a quick side by side comparison of 2 watches I really love: the VC Overseas Deep Stream and the AP Offshore “Ghost” 42mm.

Both watches have a lot in common and clearly use the same “recipe” while keeping their own personality:

“Genta” design actually not designed by Genta

- Original / unusual bezel

- Case designed for integrated bracelet but worn on rubber or alligator strap

- Same color palette in “shades of grey”

- Similar dial with texture (mega tapisserie for the AP, “Soleillage” for the VC) + white gold indexes and handS

- Both cases are 42mm and use titanium (main case for the AP, only bezel for the VC)

- Fun fact: I bought both new from an official retailer and both stopped working within 1 week and ended up with a warranty movement exchange ( seems like I have a “holy trinity” curse as these have been my only watches with mechanical issues... let’s see how it goes if I get a Patek one day smile

In terms of quality comparison:

- Dials / hands are on par with maybe a very slight hedge for the VC

- Case finishing is clearly superior on the AP

-Movements are on par, JLC caliber for the VC vs AP in-house 3126 + Dubois-depraz module for the Offshore. I’d rate both movements as nicely finished without being memorable. They’re doing a decent job but you don’t buy these watches for their horological prowess. The AP movement Is slightly better finished but feels a bit small in diameter and i’d rather have a solid case back.

- Strap: black rubber and alligator. Rubber is on par, Alligator horn back is superior on the AP... but the VC has a deployant buckle while the AP has a simple pin buckle - feels a bit AP did some cost cutting sad

- Design: mater of tastes but I’d rate the AP as vastly superior. It’s the watch which started it all more than 20 years ago. It’s more iconic and will still be strong 20 years from now

- Price: both are not “cheap” but the AP is 3x time more expensive than the VC... which makes it a very irrational purchase

What differentiate these watches is the wearing experience: the VC is very subtle, kind of “low profile” and unassuming. Most people have no clue what it is. I take it for office / business travel and never worry about it.

On the other hand the AP is quite “loud” and more “flashy”. It has much more wrist presence, the case is much thicker... and it attracts a lot more attention. It’s probably fine to wear it in public in Zurich but a sale associate at the AP boutique in Geneva told me a few weeks ago that he feels that even Geneva is not 100% safe anymore to rock a Royal Oak with short sleeves. Forget about Paris subway smile

Ultimately... I love both but might love the AP a bit more smile It has flaws and is not the best price / quality ratio in the world... but this is also what makes it a more emotional affair. For me it’s “The” sport chrono; not everything should be rational smile

Enjoy the WE

Seb

I second that.

I quite like the display back on the Gen3, but the solid case back with the Vespuci is what constantly itches me to get a Gen2. Thanks for the excellent comparison of these classics, Seb! Best, Daniel

Fully agree, that’s one of the best case back engraving

I’ve ever seen... the back of the AP is nice but does not have the same “magic”

Seb, I recommend you

to add a VC bracelet on your deepstream. My son LOVE it +++++ and he is very proud to wear it on bracelet.

Thoughts very well put together. Sentiment is everything - it dictates what's right/wrong or good/better/best at a given time. We have...

... always found a way to rationalize the ongoing sentiment. The prevailing sentiment cud change going forward and quite quickly or not. That's why one should put emotion in the front seat and hype in the back.
