Amanico's 2009 post champions the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle Open-Worked Skeleton as the standout novelty of the year. This article explores why this particular timepiece, with its ultra-thin Caliber 1120 movement and intricate skeletonization, captivated the community. It synthesizes discussions on its artistry, wearability, and comparisons to other high-end skeleton watches from brands like Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.

The Patrimony Tradtionnelle Open- Worked Skeleton!

To me, this is truely THE Masterpiece of the year, among all the VC novelties this year.

The Chronos, simple or Perpetual Calendars, are cool, but too classic, too wise, IMO, and too big.

The 1921 was a reveletion for me, but compared to the awesome work made by VC with this Patrimony open - worked Skeleton, it is a step above, in terms of finish, and price, as well.

With the Patrimony Skeleton, you are in another dimension of perfection, of true VC DNA and spirit.

You're between Art and Horology, better, you have both!

The Extra Thin Cal 1120 ( only 2, 45 mm !) is housed in a very elegant and peefectly proportionned 38mm White Gold Case.

Even if, like the Chronos, I would have preferred to see the lugs of the Malte Line, I have to say that the outcome is really awesome.

I spent a lot of time contemplating this Beauty, admiring it, and totally loosing the notion of time, which is a very good sign. LOL

Here, the watch under different angles, to focus on the sober and efficient shape of the case:

The Back, also , is to admire.

for an automatic movement, this is awesome!

The work on each part of the movement is highy finished and worked, even the Rotor, which is a real sculpture.

If you want to get the full interest of this piece of Art, you have to put it on its side, like that:

*

The dial is a gorgeous play of light and transparency.

And, as every exceptionnal watch, it will be able to survive to the Macro Test without problems:

In the Family of " simple " Time keepers coming with a skeleton dial, to me this VC is one of the nicest, if not the nicest, with the AP RO I recently saw in Paris:

Don't you notice that the movements look similar?

To wear it is a big pleasure, indeed.

The only problem is that if you have a hairy wrist like mine, you can see your wrist through the dial...

But it was an unique experience!

Hope you shared my joy and excitement on this watch.

Best.

About the Vacheron Constantin Historiques Ref. American1921

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 is a distinctive reinterpretation of a cushion-shaped watch originally produced by the manufacture for the American market in the 1920s. This reference is characterized by its unique diagonal display, with the crown positioned at the 1 o'clock position and the dial rotated 45 degrees clockwise. This design was historically intended to allow drivers to read the time without removing their hands from the steering wheel, offering both a functional and aesthetically unconventional presentation within the Historiques collection.

This particular iteration of the American 1921 features a case crafted from precious metal, often rose gold, with a polished finish that highlights its cushion shape and stepped bezel. The watch is typically fitted with a manual-winding mechanical movement, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, providing a power reserve suitable for daily wear. The crystal protecting the dial is also sapphire, ensuring clarity and scratch resistance.

The American 1921 appeals to collectors seeking pieces with historical provenance and an unconventional design. Its distinctive orientation and vintage inspiration make it a conversation piece and a unique offering within Vacheron Constantin's contemporary lineup. Various sizes have been produced, catering to different wrist preferences while maintaining the core design principles of the original 1921 model.

" problem is that if you have a hairy wrist like mine, you can see your wrist through the dial..." it is yet another bonus because you have in certain angles and illumination quasi black meteorite like dial :0) congratulation on newest catch ... skeleton as it best ... only VC can do it like that my VC winner is Americaine 1921 Best Damian

has only gotten better with time. For a vintage snob like myself this is one area in which the watches of today completely outclass their predecessors (and I own a skeleton perpetual from the late 1980's). From your picture of the Royal Oak I'd say that AP's engraving has improved over time as well. Though if I had to choose one of the novelties to add to the collection I think I would make the Patrimony Chronograph mine. Bill

The engraving work is magnificent. Unfortunately, it seems skeleton watches are often under appreciated. IMHO the new Traditionelle Skeleton watch is a real beauty. Best regards, Dino

And maybe it is easier for us to get their sublime Beauty, Bill? The good thing is that we all have our Chamions, and that we defend them with passion. And wait a bit, " La Crem de la Creme " is coming...soon. Best. Nicolas

than it was 20 years ago. My watch is at VC for service, but when I get it back I'll take some macro photographs and compare them with yours (at least on the back side it will be easy to compare the differences on the 1120 caliber). Bill

Agree with all...VC skeleton movements are fantastic AND underappreciated. They belong, IMHO, alongside their minute repeater as ultimate expressions of horological art. Much preferred over the Kalla in any variation too ;-)
