blomman Mr Blue presents the eleventh installment of his 'Vintage Ads: The Series,' offering a nostalgic look back at the 1949 Geneva Jewels and Watches Exhibition. This post serves as a historical counterpoint to contemporary watch fairs like SIHH, highlighting the evolution of watch advertising and the shifting focus within the industry over decades.

Hello Watch Lovers,

While we wait for the new watches presented at SIHH 2012 in Geneva…

What could be better than take a look in the rear mirror?

This Vintage Ads series has been a long term project of mine over at the JLC forum.

But this part I feel is better posted here in the HoMe forum.

Hope you don’t mind!

So, let’s go back to 1949 Geneva: Jewels and Watches Exhibition

Even if the name of the fair indicates it, I find it very surprising to see the focus on Ladies watches!

Many known brands but also brand less know today…

But the usual suspect where all there!

Longines,…

And some brands mostly known to vintage collectors…

Some still around, but maybe not that well known today…

Interesting that Gay Freres had their own slot – bracelet maker, all others are watch or jewelry   manufactures…

The big guns like…

Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Omega, …

Rolex, Vacheron & Constantin, …

Still around today!

Jaeger-LeCoultre, Ebel, Baume & Mercier, …

Zenith, Ulysse Nardin, …

Girard Perrgaux, IWC…….

Even if the watches may not be of today’s fashion…

I must say I love the air of this advertising!

Flair, elegance, glamour, …

smile

Longing to see all the new offerings from our favorite brands!

Or do we secretly hope they all strike out so we get a break..?

wink

Thank you for reading this Part 11 of this Vintage Ads Series.

Hope you enjoyed!

Best

I am impressed, my friend. Thank you so much, it is really nice to have an eye on these ads. Even if most of the featured watches are not my taste, the ambience is ... palpable ". Best, Nicolas.

I must agree that the 1959 add does have a touch of class. All the styles are not those of today of the major brands, I feel that if you looked into some of today's fantasy jewelry makers you might find similar styles. Today we are still a little bling bling in our advertisement. Who uses pink today. Best regards, George

But all I find interesting! Not really my cup of tea either – but interesting to see the same brand “doing it” 60+ years ago! Like Watch Fairs catalogues and ads… Maybe I will post a few more before SIHH. Thank you for your support, my friend! Best Blomman

Indeed! I would like more of this kind of advertising instead of a celebrity sitting there smiling the same way as in the coffee commercial… Best, my friend Blomman
