India Whiskey Charlie introduces the Zenith Chronomaster Revival El Primero A384 "Shadow," a model that quickly sparked discussion among collectors. This article delves into the community's initial reactions and detailed observations regarding Zenith's design choices and material selection for this distinctive timepiece. India Whiskey Charlie's original post serves as the foundation for exploring the nuances of this release.
The Zenith El Primero reference A384 is notable for being among the earliest models to house the brand's high-frequency automatic chronograph movement. Introduced in 1969, it presented a distinctive aesthetic that set it apart from many of its contemporaries, characterized by its tonneau-shaped case and a dial layout that became a signature for the El Primero line. This reference is recognized for its historical significance in the development of automatic chronographs.
The A384 features a stainless steel case, measuring 37mm in diameter. It is powered by the Zenith El Primero caliber 3019 PHC, an integrated automatic column-wheel chronograph movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, providing a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. The watch typically utilized an acrylic crystal, contributing to its vintage appeal and period-correct specifications.
This reference appeals to collectors interested in the foundational pieces of the El Primero series and early automatic chronographs. Its design, while unique, is a clear precursor to later El Primero models, making it a key piece for understanding the evolution of the line. The A384 is valued for its originality and its place in watchmaking history.
I prefer this one...
At least this new model has "no date."
I would've preferred a PVD coating from a wear and tear perspective (I'm reminded of how that Lagerfeld AP looks so good.. I believe HSTE has one). Or a regular unpolished ss case. I do like the look of that Ti case. Just skeptical about how it's going to hold up.
A review: www.hodinkee.com n P.S. Did anyone notice the lack of minutes/seconds chapter ring?
Now I can't un-see it. And with the El Primero, of all things, not to be able to read the seconds precisely? What were they thinking? Maybe it's a pre-production dummy, and the actual release will have a seconds/minutes scale, as does the vintage piece Nico posted. If not, I can only consider this to be some kind of monumental blunder. ;-0
I like this new Zenith....i still don’t have an el primero powered watch. However, with the amazing new JLC Masters that’s just were announced. It’s really hard to decide! The complete calendar Chrono is stunning. So is the triple cal without the Chrono....I still don’t have a JLC.... How do JLC and Zenith fit, finish and reliability compare to Rolex? Cheers bud!
