Ornatus-Mundi presents a hands-on review of the Zenith Elite Ladies Moonphase, unveiled at BaselWorld 2016. This article meticulously details the 36mm timepiece, emphasizing its design continuity with the men's Elite 6150, its technical features, and its aesthetic appeal. It provides a comprehensive look at Zenith's offering for the female collector, highlighting both elegance and horological substance.

This year at Baselworld 2016, Zenith presented the female version of its big splash from last year, the new Zenith Elite 6150: the 36mm small sibling, the Zenith Elite Ladies Moonphase:

Althogether, there are 8 different versions: steel and red gold case; roman or simple line indices; plain or diamond-studded bezel. Here are a few of them:

For an overview and all version (including those with a different case) please visit Zenith's website: HERE !

The Zenith Elite Ladies Moonphase retains exactly the same classy elegance and intellectual sobriety as its male (and 42mm) counterpart. In fact, the proportions are so well preserved that from a quick look one would not notice the difference in diameter (the fact that the Elite 6150 comes only with a central seconds and is (so far) devoid of any complication helps here, I guess):

Even from its side the design language is nicely preserved. note the lack of pusher holes: the moon phase is set with the crown, a very practical solution which sets Zenith’s implementation of this complication atop many competitors in the industry!

On the back you clearly notice a difference: instead of the new 100h movement Elite 6150 we find the venerable Elite 692, still good for 50h of autonomy:

Next, let’s appreciate a few details: The dial is finely crafted from mother-or-pearl, the indices are either painted with a generous amount of ink or engraved and rhodium plated (depending on the model; see further below). Matching too the material of the case, both leaf-shaped hour and minute hands come with a red gold or rhodium plating.

The seconds hand is (in any version) blued by hand (using the traditional heat-blueing technique):

I really like this precise and sober execution of the moon phase cutout and disk:

On the wrist, here with Zenith’s Miss R as wrist model, the Elite Ladies Moonphase demonstrates her ethereal beauty and timelessness. It is a timepiece which emphases her wearer’s elegance and competence in style. For a watch defined for a female audience it comes at a generous size, perfected by an accomplished fine-tuned arrangement of details, all in harmonious proportions to each other.

Particularly if viewed from the sides the proportionality becomes apparent:

I think this watch is a serious watch, not only (?) a serious ladies’ timepiece. It combines aesthetic excellence with solid watchmaking content. The example of the moon phase mechanism demonstrates the technical dedication one can expect (but does not always get in exchange for money) from a traditional accomplished manufacture.

With its design and the 36mm case diameter I would go as far as suggesting this watch even for those men who are endowed with slender wrists. Exchange the MOP dial with the brushed one from its 6150 cousin and I think this watch would be a very compelling offering!

Thanks for reading,
Magnus

About the Zenith Elite Ref. Elite6150

The Zenith Elite 6150 represents a contemporary interpretation of the brand's classic dress watch aesthetic, distinguished by its larger case size and the introduction of a new iteration of the Elite movement. This reference aimed to offer a more modern presence on the wrist while retaining the refined characteristics associated with the Elite collection, positioning it as a versatile option within Zenith's non-chronograph offerings. It marked a period of exploration for the Elite line, moving towards broader appeal.

This particular reference features a stainless steel case with a diameter of 42mm, housing the in-house Zenith Elite 6150 automatic movement. The movement provides a substantial power reserve of 100 hours, a notable enhancement for daily wear. The watch is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal, contributing to its understated profile, and typically includes a transparent sapphire case back to display the movement.

For collectors, the Elite 6150 appeals to those seeking a contemporary dress watch from a manufacture with significant horological heritage, particularly valuing the Elite movement's architecture and extended power reserve. It stands as an example of Zenith's commitment to developing its non-El Primero calibers, offering an alternative for enthusiasts who appreciate a clean, time-only display with robust technical specifications. This reference is often considered for its balance of size, movement quality, and design.

The dial looks great on this lady's Zenith

It\'s Mother of pearl but it\'s so smooth and silky it looks a bit like grand feu enamel on some pics Love it! Can\'t show my wife though as I recently wrestled back my Breguet marine from her and I sense she wants a new watch from me Cheers Robin

Robin, that would be a wonderful Purist's gift...

plus the MOP makes it unique - guess you can look for a dial you really like (being more or less structured for example). Best, Magnus

Do they have a medium size case Zenith Elite Moonphase? Dial Factory Photos inside

Thanks for the report, Magnus. I've a plain Zenith Elite watch somewhere but it has a plain white lacquer dial. I think this 36mm case is a tad small for my wrist but the 42mm is "fashionably" too big. Now that the Age of Huge watches is over, I would venture for a classic 38 - 39mm case. A mother-of-pearl dial can be worn by men as they were since the beginning of Time. Selection of mother-of-pearl Both ends of the spectrum Its translucent ! Regards, MTF

Did you try the 36mm on your wrist?

Of course lug size and shape dial size vs case size.. .. but 36 is often correct for men wrists and elegant watches
