Jaeger Lecoultre Geophysic E 168. Part IV: The Grande Finale.

Ok, I have to confess that I have a last part I will post later, but I wanted to end this summer series with a Vintage Geophysic Grande Finale.

According to the Manufacture, there were all metal and references included, 1393 Geophysic made. A bit more in my opinion, as I objectively think that more than 30 Geophysic E 168 in rose gold were made. Excluding the Reference E 169, so my guess estimate is that we are somewhere between 1500 and 1600 pieces, in total.

Indeed, I saw a good twenty-ish Geophysic in rose gold, and among them, a bit more than half in the real life... Truth to be told, I saw much less Geophysic in yellow gold!

All that to tell you that seeing a vintage Geophysic in the metal(s) is quite rare. But seeing several at the same place and moment is quite thrilling.

Let's start with a superb pair, in steel and in rose gold, with the classic dial:

none

Just sublime. A word on the hands on the rose gold, though. Dauphine hands are correct but not with this lume, which is too thick.

Here is a set of correct Dauphine hands. Do you see the difference?

none

The lume is much thinner.

Now a couple of crossairs Geophysic, in steel, and in yellow gold. The Crosshairs dials in steel and in yellow gold, are pretty rare. Here again, seeing both of them is pretty rare.

none

I have to say that I am not a fan of colored gold, but here I would make a notable exception, because of the charm and the understatement of such pieces.

What about a foursome, now with the two dials configurations? Isn't that the ultimate Geophysic Collection?

none

And now, 6 E 168 together... The killer photo.

none

I could have added mine, which was on my wrist, at the moment of the photo.

For the ultimate collection, some will say that there are still missing a Geophysic in yellow gold, and they will be right, as well as the Geophysic De Luxe Ref 2985, and the less known E 169, which is a Geophysic in gold with its integrated bracelet in gold, too.

The E 169:

none

But for me, as a big fan of this watch, THE Geophysic is the E 168, whatever the metal or the dial. Indeed, the Geophysic De Luxe is not amagnetic, as it doesn't have the soft iron dust cover which acts like a magnetic shield, and the E 169 is too " mannered " for me.

Seeing all these Geophysic at the same place is a truly special moment I lived. Which I wanted to share with you.

What is your favorite among them? Dial and metal?

Looking forward to reading your comments and thoughts,

Best.

Nicolas

Woommhh.. It cannot get better than this !.. I remember one occasion seeing several of them on a table.. Unforgetable.. :)) Somehow, I still like the crosshair dials, although the plain ones.. are sublime ! On a humble personal note, I‘ll have to live with my Tribute.. And you know what, she always makes me smile ! Thx for this stimulating share, Best, hs

I enjoyed all the 4 parts of this story... These examples you’ve got are in excellent condition, the dials are pristine and have aged well... Esp, I like the one with ‘Djibouti’ - a country I discovered due to your post ! Best, Mahesh., ...

Even at Jaeger Lecoultre, they know that I am not a big fan of paved watches. I almost never take pictures of them, truth to be told. But here, I made an exception. Why? Because here, it is not only about jewelry! Indeed, not only these two watches are a ture challenge in terms of fine jewelry, and you will soon understand why, but they are also, or should I say mainly, an object of horology.
