Description

UG's Tri-Compax was introduced in 1944 as the brand's flagship, innovative chronograph. Ref 881101/01 boasted a fully functional chronograph, with a triple calendar and moonphase complication, packaged in a 36mm case that, despite a compact form, remains proportionate and legible. Inside the 881101/01 beats a Martel caliber 821 movement (featuring a Breguet hairspring, 17 jewels, 18,000 vph and a 36 hour power reserve) -- a first of its kind within the Tri-Compax line and is famously known as one of Eric Clapton's favourite references.

Interestingly, the luminous material seems to have patinated into the white dial, developing into an incredible pale pistachio/mint shade. It is the only watch I have ever seen in this colour, from just under 150 examples of reference 881101/01 which have been documented so far. The bezel has also started to develop a light "ghosting" effect -- a slight fade with a soft tinge of blue; visible only under particular lighting.

- 36mm case with twisted lugs
- Crisp, DON bezel
- Sharp, unpolished case (with reference and serial # clearly stamped on caseback)
- 2.3 mil serial
- Watch recently serviced and is keeping time and functioning perfectly
- Sold as head only
- Watch and I are located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

📖 About This Reference

The Universal Geneve reference 881101/01 represents the Tri-Compax series from 1944, featuring a white dial configuration. This reference utilizes the Martel 821 caliber and demonstrates the brand s chronograph offerings from the mid-1940s production period. The watch houses a 36mm steel case fitted with an acrylic crystal and fixed bezel. The manual-wind Martel 821 movement provides 36 hours of power reserve, while water resistance reaches 30 meters. The timepiece is completed with a leather strap and maintains the white dial specification throughout this reference designation. This reference appeals to collectors focused on mid-20th century chronographs and Universal Geneve production from the 1940s era. The 36mm case size and steel construction position it within the accessible vintage chronograph segment, while the Tri-Compax series designation indicates its place in Universal Geneve s multi-register chronograph lineup. The manual movement and period-correct specifications make it suitable for collectors seeking representative examples from this production year.

“tri-compax”= 3 subdials ? No
The term 'tri-compax' originally referred to watches with three complications, not subdials. It's not accurate to use it solely based on the number of subdials. 'Tri-compax' can also apply to watches with four subdials in specific arrangements.

Underappreciated Girard-Perregaux’s from the 1990s – Part III: Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1996 Chronograph 4930
Friends, It’s time to continue our little series of hidden GP gems from the 90s with Part III. I actually have shifted the order from what I had planned initially as for the watch I planned for Part III, some additional information may become available in a couple of weeks, so I’m swapping things ar

Seen in Vienna - Universal Genève Tri-Compax
Friends, Seen in Vienna during our GTG – this lovely Tri-Compax with Triple Date and Moon Phases! Nice patina and I find the case is very sensual. Good solid screw-down case back. Now the lucky owner only needs to find a correct buckle to make the watch complete! These UG Compax chronographs is a ar

UG Tri-Compax.
Here is something I have been waiting on. I have acquired this one a while back, in terrible condition but at a beautiful price. It is cca. 1970s. With help from my dear friend Damjan, I had it serviced and refreshed. Today, it was Damjan who delivered it to me, and it truly reminded me of the real

Universal Genève Tri Compax. Some pictures.
Another vintage Chronograph I could carry an autopsy on, with a few pictures. Nice case, superb dial, great movement. These Chrono Calendars are a classic in a collection. Snap back case, showing the ref number ( 22 279 ) and the serial number dating it circa 1945. The case is circa 36 / 37 mm big.
