Identifying future classic Rolex from the 1990-2018 era - Part 3: The “Swiss” only effect with four examples

This is Part 3 of the series that aims to identify future classics from within the ranks of modern Rolex watches - areas perhaps that vintage collectors have not paid attention to. Historically, if one looks back at the many different vintage Rolex watches that have drawn collectors attention, one finds subtle nuances in the dials that cause the attraction. For example, when a dial has something that differentiates it from the vast majority of dials in a reference, it becomes much rarer and thus something ... ...Story

Identifying future classic Rolex from the 1990-2018 era - Part I: Rolex 16610LV

I was recently chatting with a friend. He was bemoaning the fact that the current “hot” steel Rolex were just impossible to get from an AD and were now trading at a substantial premium in the grey market. A steel Daytona 116500 is now fetching $18,000+. I saw the new GMT Pepsi offered at over $20,000...Story

A review on the 2016 Rolex Air King Ref 116 900.

The Rolex Air King 116 900 is not a strange watch, it is a strange Rolex. When it was unveiled, at the 2016 Basel Fair, it generated some strong comments: " The dial is too messy " was one of the comments we could most often read. It is not every day you can see a Rolex reference which doesn't look like another one. The GMT MASTER has its own personality, so is the Submariner, the Sea Dweller, at the exception of the Deep Sea Dweller James Cameron, the Daytona and so on...Story

Current model GMTs - what is you cup of T?

Taste is a fickle beast. What works for one person is anathema to another. Bottom line is that there is, and never can be, a definitive right or wrong when it comes to personal taste. Similarly, the reasons why one person buys a watch is, by definition, unique to that person...Story

My collection of modern Rolex, and my projects.

By modern I mean from the 90's to nowadays, the Rolex before the 90's are neo vintage for me. So, what do I have? The Daytona 16520: The Explorer II 16570: The Yacht Master 16222: The Milgauss 116400 GV: And the Air King 2016 Edition, the 116 900: The funny thing I noticed is that in that selection, there are only Un-Rolex references. At the exception of the Daytona 16520, of course. But the others are not typical Rolex: The Milgauss and the Air King are totally crazy with their splashes of colors...Story

Rolex Daytona - 116500 versus 116519 (Part II)

Last Thursday, it was decision time between the Daytona 116500 and the 116519. I am attaching below my original deliberation between the two watches. I had narrowed the choice down to these two for many reasons. Ultimately, I needed to make a choice...Story

Tudor Submariner 7923.A review of one of the rarest if not THE rarest reference from Tudor.

Some months ago, there was a listing on Ebay about a Tudor 7923. This very same watch has been auctioned and a watch dealer from California got it. And re sold it. This is this very same watch I was very lucky to see in the metal, some days ago, in Paris, as it is now one of my friend's property...Story

Rolex Daytona - 116500LN..... "whattya gonna do"?

Avatar

I have taken the decision to add a modern chronograph to my collection and decided to take a look within Rolex. In making that decision, I decided to have a read through the official Rolex literature describing their Cosmograph Daytona range. To quote the official Rolex blurb about the Cosmograph Daytona……… “introduced in 1963, was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers. With its highly reliable chronograph and bezel with tachymetric scale, it allows drivers to perfectly measure average .....Story

Welcome to the big Tudor Black Bay fashion show!

When I purchased the Tudor Black Bay Steel + Gold two weeks ago, a major factor in my immediate fascination for that watch came from the pre-aged leather strap that perfectly matched the matte golden elements of the case itself. Unfortunately, it was rather short, so I decided to order one in XL, which will take its time to arrive, unfortunately. Packed in the watch box also came a very nice NATO strap: This, too, is suffering from the length issue, but I did not order a longer original strap, since the after ... ...Story
