Listening, Part 1

Avatar

"Listen to your Father!" is a common thing said by mothers to their children. "Pay attention" is frequently uttered by teachers in a classroom. "Listen Up" is something figures in authority usually say before giving instructions. I thought about listening when David Walter posted here about his MicroSet device " hearing " a recent earthquake...Story

Making a 1 Second Pendulum Clock (3D printed)

Avatar

Pendulum clocks are fascinating me these days. And of course different ways of making them. Having recently acquired a 3D FDM printer I decided to see how (if) one could make a precision clock using this means of production. As I already had a mechanical design for a clock with a Graham escapement that I had planned to make traditionally in brass this was a great starting point for an interesting summer project...Story

A very rare Virgule escapement pocket watch

Avatar
David Walter
I occassionly work on antique pieces if they are "Interesting", this watch in a gold case and signed on the cuvette Pournier a Geneve, fell into the "interesting" catagory.. The dial is unsigned. The Lepine style movement is also not signed, it is possible that this is a movement made by Lepine for a business client. The movement is "before jewels" meaning all pivots including the balance pivots run in brass bushings and have hard steel endpieces...Story

WatchTech at BaselWorld 2016 - Ronda

Avatar

Ronda announced at BaselWorld this year their (re)entry into the fray of mechanical movement producers. Ever since ETA announced that it would no longer serve all customers there has been great concern by many brands to get replacements for the ETA movements they have been using. Ronda is a major producer of high quality quartz movements and had also in their history produced mechanical movements, up into the 1980s. Ronda produces their parts at several sites in Switzerland and does assembly of those parts .....Story

Patience Please – Measurements on a Precision Pendulum

Avatar
DonCorson
I have recently been surprised by a new insight I have had working on my first pendulum clock. It is again something that can be explained with the help of that enigmatic parameter of oscillating systems known as the quality factor Q. I have discussed the quality factor before here, as I presented a lecture by Douglas Bateman about the quality factor and the first results measured on my own pendulum clock. Since those first results I have changed the weight by making it smaller and also heavier (filling with .....Story
