Blancpain Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC Reissue

I recently acquired a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC Reissue to add to my collection. I previously had a Rolex 5513 occupying that spot, but wanted something with more character and modern specs, while maintaining some of the vintage charm. I haven’t taken the FF off my wrist since getting it, and couldn’t be happier with the decision at this point. Phenomenal in-house movement with haute horlogerie finishes, interesting dial, great proportions, and solid specs make this one of the best divers out there, period. Below are my first impressions:

- Dial: this is one of the main aspects that made me pull the trigger on this piece. Beyond the expertly finished dial, the addition of the moisture indicator adds a lot of character and personality. Although the indicator should hopefully be a useless complication due to the modern build, the pop of color draws the eyes and transforms the dial. Besides, it makes this reissue true to its historical roots, when the indicator had a critical use case.

- Bezel: the bezel action is very satisfying, as should be expected from a top-tier diver. The use of sapphire on the bezel also allows for generous application of lume on the bezel markers, which is also a plus. Speaking of lume, this FF is a torch in the dark. Very well-lit all around.

- Wearability: another major plus for this model is that it has the Goldilocks proportions for a Fifty Fathoms. A lot of other models in the family are way too large for my 6.5”, and the 40.3mm diameter is exactly my sweet spot. It sits well and wears comfortably.

- Movement: another major plus here… 100 hours of power reserve and expertly finished, with many haute horlogerie decorations. Blancpain does a stellar job on this department, and makes the piece feel more bespoke versus industrial. The love of craft really shows, and is certainly appreciated.

- Strap: the strap is beautiful and fits with the theme. A couple of minuses here… it does feel stiff at first and needs to be broken in. Also, the number of holes on the strap are insufficient. I had to add 2 holes to accommodate my wrist size, which is a miss on BP’s part—if you’re going to have a smaller size, then make sure that smaller wrists can wear it out of the box. Finally, the lack of a bracelet might be a detractor for some. I’m really enjoying mine on the sailcloth strap… another point of distinction

I’d highly recommend it for those looking for a highly capable diver that’s different than the popular choices out there.
