A good reminder why it’s not only case size. But also lug to lug, case thickness and even lug width. All will contribute to how a watch wears and fits on the wrist. I find 38-39 mm is the sweet spot for my 7 inch wrist , but yesterday I just went really wild and bought a 40 mm diver! 😂
Thoughts on the perfect sized watch.
Aside from Diving, where I say go as large as possible, I have found over the years that the best size for any wrist should follow the 20-60-20 rule. When you look straight down at your wrist, you should see roughly 20% strap, 60% dial, and 20% strap.
With the exception of my Submariner
and my B&R 123-92 I prefer 36mm, seems to fit my wrist perfectly.

Always count the lugs
As part of the strap when they exceed the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock part of the case. (Visually fit the case in a square where 12 3 6 9 part of the case touches the square. So here part of the lugs belong to the dial (inside the square ) and anything that ...
38-38.5mm seems like the sweet spot for a dress watch on my 7.25" wrist...
...but for a watch like a 3940 I'd go 36mm...
Your (for you) defined ratio is very much dependent on the distance you were taking the photo… 😉
I think this is not generalizable. It depends on the wrist, on the watch itself and it’s bezel, it’s dial color, horn-length and -form…
12.5% strap, 75% dial, and 12.5% strap.
My old eyes likes big dials. Or put another way.... . . . wait for it . . . . . Size Matters 😁 ...

I have from 37mm up to 46mm and enjoy them all. I’m a bit selfish and only intend to please myself with my watch choices.
