Officine Panerai

Absolutely agree....

While all the tribute limited edition pieces have enhanced the brand popularity,  I think moving towards the future by going back to the Panerai roots is great but not only in visual design. I think Panerai as a tool and equipment company and its relationship with the military is also important.  Why can't Panerai again work with today's military to somehow create a new design and apply that new design to its high priced time pieces?  Is that way off base?  To not dilute the brand, perhaps creating a separate entity exclusively for practical purposes and using that entity as a creative resource of new design ideas.  To me it adds merit and reiterates brand substance from its manufacturing origins.

The 193 is an example of a company searching in the wrong place for a well designed watch. The 193 lacks something.  As an instrument, it is nice and interesting but falls short of any useful purpose for me as a diver.  It's not really a depth gauge I would use for diving at it's price point and design. The design lacks a some practical design elements, like easy battery replacement and remaining battery life indicator; important components of a "diving" depth gauge with a battery and yet it's not part of the 193 design.  It's impractical, I would only buy it now if I thought it was an investment.  Would I have bought and used the 193 if those additional design elements were added? Yes probably.  It's the super hungryman hamburger without meat. Besides the visual design, for me watches are more than timepieces; there's a practical usability that enhances the reason it's on my wrist.
