Distortion is not exactly funhouse mirror dramatic..
But if you have shot with something like a 28mm elmarit lens, it could be a bit exaggerated especially if you shoot up or down at an angle. I find it even more exaggerated compared to a 21mm lens. So a cropped version would sort of carry over those characteristics.

My main “concern” (if mi may call it so) is how different is the perspective/look of pictures cropped from say 28 to 43 versus taken directly into 43? Is that a major concern or something that is not really visible?

Your style is street. and I think a Q would cause alot of intentionality in terms of carrying kit. The Ricoh GR IV gets raves from folks I know who use it. If it were me, I'd get as small as possible AND get a full frame to boot
