Now, here is a nutt for all of you to crack! šŸ˜ƒ

As you all know Zenith's striking 10 watch rotates during 10 sec one complete cycle over the dial. Why is this 5470 rotating in 12 sec over the dial and not in 10? The Zenith and the 5470 share the same beat ratio of 36.000 pbh. I instantly noticed this detail and thought about the reason for that (and no one else of you šŸ§!). I think, I might have the answer to it ...

I let you all suffer and share your thoughts and will post another thread to explain my thought. Cordially and sadistically Moritz

Horological flexing by Thierry?

Eerrrm ... a bit of truth in your suggestion ... but not quite.

Joke asideā€¦

The red marker provides a slightly higher resolution view of the 10th of a second scale, as confusing as it may be. Admittedly a high achievement technically ā¤ļø

Yes, and read my response to Fab.

Hi Count, maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but given the dial configuration and that the measurement is set at 1/10-th of a second, that's *necessarily* the time for a rotation.... In your model, you'd be measuring *1/12-th* of a second! ;-))

 By: FabR : April 14th, 2022-10:33

Aaah ... I was then thinking of a different issue

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-11:17
I focused more on the "classic 4 to 8" positions of chronos with two chrono hands.
With 10 sec/rotation this display would not be possible.
You are certainly correct šŸ‘

With El Primero the "lightning" chronograph hand indeed does one full rotation over the dial in 10 seconds, while here it takes 12 seconds. It is just a question of the gearing used (how the hand is driven) and gear ratios.

 By: countzero : April 14th, 2022-11:57
The underlying movement frequency is the same in both cases, being 5 hz or 36'000 bph, i.e. 10 beats or "half-rotations" per second, i.e. the escape wheel advances 10 times per second.

That is correct šŸ‘

I thought.......

 By: guycord : April 14th, 2022-13:33
...it was cost cutting from Patek. Using the 1-12 and denominators, a new scale is not required and therefore keeps the cost down for everyone.

So its only it only costs CHF380,000 rather than CHF380,001 with a new separate 1/10th scale

 By: guycord : April 14th, 2022-13:34

I am sure one can ask for that CHF 1 as discount ... šŸ˜ƒ

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-14:55

I would not bring Patek in the context with the term "cost savings". šŸ˜ƒ

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-14:48

A new, additional scale would have been needed, if it would do a full rotation in 10 sec.

It's Rather Simple Really

For years it's been easy pickings. Just change a dial color and the sheeple lose their minds.

With this new model, PP completes the circle of stupidity.

Naaah ... it is not stupidity. It is luxury. There are people out there who can spend this sort of money for it, like most of us do for a Rolex. Nothing wrong here: it is a highly desirable watch!

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-14:47

Personally, I very much struggle to see the value. Alternatives at around that price, or dare we say lower, are more creative and attractive to me,

Yet agree, there's plenty of currency available right now seeking to be exchanged for physical items. We live in interesting times my friend.

I really would likeā€¦

ā€¦to see a video of this in actionā€¦

On Youtube possiblyšŸ¤”

I've been too busy lately to look, but I will give it a shot.

Hi Matt, a short video that is publicly available is for instance the one below on Youtube (more can be found, e.g., at a ' Patek "5470P" ' search):

Note that a (longer) presentation video for this model was originally available on Patek's site (one hour after our announcement here on April 6), so I assume it will eventually be uploaded onto Patek's YT channel ;-) Cheers.

Patek Philippe Ref. 5470P-001 1/10th Second Monopusher Chronograph

Very well done...

 By: mdg : April 14th, 2022-19:31
...I will look for others that show how the 1/10th second function works...

I like the display Patek has introducedā€¦

 By: oyster case : April 14th, 2022-17:00
Itā€™s a very elegant solution that makes the 1/10th reading simple and the external track markings cohabit beautifully. Gorgeous watch!

Well put ...

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-18:17

Iā€™ll be honest

By: socal to az : April 14th, 2022-18:17
I donā€™t know how this watch works. How do you get 1/10 of a second when there are 12 positions on the dial?  Was waiting for a video or something.  Glad Iā€™m not the only idiot who couldnā€™t figure this outā€¦

Well, it is a,bit difficult, yes

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-18:39
... but than not.
Think as it as such:
Patek has made to the naked eye invisible 10 steps/sec moves of the chrono second hand visible by using another hand, that is directly linked to the chrono hands wheel, but rotates faster, because of the used ratio/gear.
Therefore it runs faster and smooth
(no 10 steps/sec anymore, which the grey, other chrono hand still does) over the dial.
Because it needs 12 sec/ rotation, it is perfectly matching the dial segmentation and very confortable for the naked eye now, to see 1/10th of a sec!
It is in essence simple šŸ˜ƒ.

So for whatever reason, Patek decided not to make another 1/10 second track like Zenith

 By: pongster : April 14th, 2022-19:31
So it made its chrono hand go 50% slower and just track 1/5 of a second using the existing minute track.

My mistake. There is another 1/10 second track.

 By: pongster : April 14th, 2022-20:23
So the chrono hand moves at 1/10 of a second. But it takes 12 seconds to complete one revolution around the dial.

The red hand moves of a12th/a minute "speed". Anytime it stops during this speed/journey on the dial, it will stop at a 1/10th position on the dial. Either at a 1/10th mark (white line) or at a 10/10th Mark (red line).

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 14th, 2022-20:39
The red hand only and always counts from 1/10th to 10/10th (that is a full second then).
