What do you see when you reflect on your watch collecting journey?
Is there a destination in your mind, or is it all a mirage?
For me it's a return to simpler, more affordable watches
Same for cars and many other things in life. Value for money, affordable luxury and generally streamlining and letting go to make my life simple.

A few phases
1. Sampling a bit of everything. I guess I am still guilty of this. IMO, the OWNERSHIP experience over weeks or months is very, very different versus trying a watch out in-person for a brief period of time. This has happened to me so many times where I ended up loving a piece I didn't like when I tried it briefly.
2. Optimizing my collection such that every watch fulfills a purpose. I am basically here. I have a lot of redundant pieces that I barely wear to be honest, and should probably sell, but I am pretty lazy about it.
🤪 it's all a mirage, of course.
We would as soon wear a pedometer, or a smart watch, as when our doctor tells us 😉

Lost sight of a destination a long time ago 😂
Or put differently - while there have been a couple of collecting themes of mine since more or less since the beginning and I broadly follow these still, I also meander around a bit depending on what I like and on top with a certain number of watches already owned the desire for additional ones has cooled somewhat. Still a list for what I would like to get but no pressing priorities anymore thanks cannot wait for a couple of years, when the opportunity is right 😊

I have moved lock stock barrel to artisanal watches. I love the efforts made by these artisans and every artisanal watch represents their sweat and toil into the finished product. I still buy the odd Rolex though.

“Collection” is too sophisticated for me
I’d rather call it an accumulation of watches that I have….
The best thing about this hobby (obsession) is the change in tastes and desire (and thank g-d) ability.
An aspirational Rolex turns into several… followed by desire for PP or AP (or both) and then discovery of smaller but iconic brands (FPJ for me). I’m going to guess that the destination will come full circle at some point. And don’t even get me started on vintage vs modern watches. This reminds me of wine collecting - most (in US) start with California cabs and end up in burgundy…
I have gone down too many rabbit holes
during my life. Some I am glad I went down and some I am trying to find my way out of.
3 I am glad I found and will stay in are watches, fountain pens and fly fishing. I have tried
to rethink purchases and the amount of money spent on certain items and am realizing
huge sums of money don't need to be spent to get quality items. I have one more watch
in mind before I close the door on watch purchases (seriously) and that would be the
Cartier tank I would like to have. I guess my watch collecting was a destination and
now it is one I have almost arrived at and am satisfied with the trip.

meeting collectors from WPS ! The friendship, watches and horological/general knowledge shared have made the journey simply INCREDIBLE so far ! The network comprises people from all walks of life, many countries and very different personalities & cultures. Hopefully this ride can continue for the rest of my life !
For me “life’s a journey, not a destination” and the same general guideline applies equally to watch collecting.
Regarding watch collecting - At times I have made mistakes, gotten sidetracked, lost my way a bit. But it has always been an interesting, intellectually stimulating journey with lots of twists and turns. Also made many new friends from around the World and learned many things - not always watch related. I don’t expect to reach a “destination” where I feel the search is over. Even if I stop buying, not buying is not the same as not thinking about buying and certainly is not the same as not looking. Best, Patekova
