Always a thrill watching Bond. Thunderball last night.

The mysterious Rolex 6538, 5510 or maybe 5508 and the cool 16mm nato strap is such a joy.  Bad pictures taken from the TV screen.

The rumor is that it was Albert Broccoli who gave him the watch as a prop to wear and it was used in coupler movies.

The crown makes me rather think of a 5510...

The mystery for me is the bezel. I does not look like a red triangle. No hash marks between 0-15 on the bezel.

Maybe even no pearl type early bezel.  Could be 6536?

Aaah yes I see. That bugged me a bit, too.

A 5510 you well know, for the comparison.

We can clearly see the pip on this shot but again no hash marks 0-15

Also the 6 o'clock marker in not a different shade like the 5510.

It looks like the bezel of a 6200.

Absolutely. Could be the bezel was swapped?

 By: Bill : October 20th, 2023-22:25

Most probably. I don't see any other explanation.

Great film …

The mystery continues, but what I do know is Ian Fleming wore an Explorer ref:1016.

For a minute I thought you grew a new arm? I was worried.

 By: aperna : October 20th, 2023-18:41

That was our Dear Sean Connery. Nice arm to be in company with. LOL.

LOL!!!

Which scene did you take the shot of?

 By: Reuven Malter : October 20th, 2023-18:41

Thunderball about 1.5 hrs into the movie. Will have to look closer.

 By: Bill : October 20th, 2023-18:44

Thank you! I have seen the movie about 100 times and there are a lot of watches to enjoy. Maybe the best bond for the Purist.

It is at 1:42 had to spend 20 minutes figuring it out.

Thank you! I'll check it later tonight again :)

This strap is rather pretty uncool! 🤦🏻‍♂️

 By: MCG (Markus) : October 20th, 2023-19:00

Here it is 16mm

 By: Bill : October 20th, 2023-19:36

Love it!

 By: amanico : October 20th, 2023-20:13

👍🏻 yes! I am not a fan of small straps, but the manufacturer has chosing this for a certain reason! Here of course it makes sense…

A 16mm strap on 20mm lugs is not cool, it just shows, that the person simply did not care… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Agree with you that it is always a thrill to view again a Bond film!

Specially those first ones with Connery as 007.

You did a great job getting these pictures from the screen.

Though all “Bond experts” agree that the watch was a 6538 Big Crown reference the clean no hash bezel is a mystery.

Also why the watch is fitted with a 16 mm band has never been explained though it is not a real Nato but a “pass through” type like the one I got for my 5508 small crown.

To add to the mystery: In the first film Dr. No it looks like he is wearing his Sub with a black leather straps if you view the first scenes of Connery and Ursula Andress.

In any case the Submariner was definitely a wonderful choice for our formidable and beloved spy till the Omega arrived to the franchise on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan.

Best cordial regards
Abel

My vote goes to the 6536 small crown with no hash marks bezel.

I think the nato strap was used as a convenient fit assuming the bracelet was too big.

Rolex 6536 no has marks bezel

Is it possible that a bezel from a 6536 was used ?

 By: Subexplorer : October 20th, 2023-23:04
The pictures show that Bond’s watch was a big crown.

By the other hand I found a picture of a 6538 BG with a four line dial and a similar no hash bezel.

It could be possible that very early Subs were equipped with both bezel types??

The mystery continues!!

 Best Abel

No mystery…… it was a 6538

Rolex 6538 enjoys both 2-4 lines and no hash marks. So did the 6536 both circa 1957

Indeed
