Patek Philippe World Time Ref 5110: Which metal is your favorite?

There are few watch references which make me want to get all the variations.

Rolex and the GMT MASTER, from the 6542 to the 116710, for example, the Jaeger Lecoultre Polaris and Deep Sea Alarm, and... The Patek 5110.

Each metal has its charm and beauty.

Till recently, I couldn't fall on a yellow gold. I didn't pull the trigger, as I would probably start with the G, if I have to go this way, to give some company to my P.

A few weeks ago, I found a J, in a watch shop in Paris, so I could take some pictures to achieve another project of mine: Posting all the metal variations of the 5110.

Let's start with the J, then:

Less warm than the R, it gives to this reference a kind of vintage appeal which is quite captivating.

And it has this natural elegance shared with all the other metals.

The R, now, is the warmer among the 4.

The thing is that the dial is very close to the J. Which may be the bigger issue if your project is to get the 4 of them.

But still, it has a lot of charm. For those who consider getting only one 5110, it wouldn't be a bad choice.

The G is indisputably the coldest, and the most under rated one, with its white metal case and white dial. Here, no contrast at all, or almost.

But it was my second choice, after the platinum which remains the king of the reference.

Still, a wonderful version. With a lot of class.

Now, the king of the category, the P.

The P has two advantages: The density of its platinum case, which is something very pleasant on a watch of this reasonable diameter ( 37 mm ) , and the superb contrast of its grey blue guilloché dial.

I was lucky to be able to find a good opportunity, some 13 years ago, and I don't regret my choice.

I am a big fan of the grey blue dial. At the point that it killed another world time I had in my collection, the 5130, in white gold.

Now, I am tempted to add the G, and to see how it will lead me....

The good news is, as I said  at the beginning of this post, you cannot go wrong with any of them.

In my opinion, the 5110 has reached a cult status, has become an icon. It is a very well balanced watch.

Its most serious contender being the relatively new 5230, which has a totally different dial and case, which is bigger, but which also shares this spirit, unique to Patek.

I am not a Patek fan, I said it many times, but I have to say that when it comes to World Time, there is Patek, and there are the others brands... In terms of charm and appeal.

Your thoughts?

Best,

Nicolas.

The G is next on my list! though I must admit the P is the most charming of all 4. Thanks for sharing

I agree that this one reference where all 4 variations are desirable  For me the order would be P, R, G, J but can’t go wrong with any of them.

P Hi, I vote P/R/G/J. I had a P and sadly sold it last year. I hope to correct that mistake! You say you are not a Patek fan but you have some amazing pieces! Best regards

Only a 5070G and a 5110P. But I cannot complain. I still have two or three moderns to add, then a few vintage. ;)
