Master of Detail: The Bulgari Octo Presentation in Rome Part 2

Details can mean everything. When everyone else is vying for the same attention, details are what will set you apart and make a lasting impression on someone’s psyche; like the woman who always looks impeccable because she pays careful attention to coordinate her accessories or the boyfriend who plans the perfect date from the setting, music and candles to the wine, food and flowers. Details will get you far when you are trying to get someone to notice you, to see that you are special and hopefully, to buy your watch.

Being overly designed with too much detail can be just as detrimental as being basic and mundane. Knowing just how much “designing” to do takes an expert eye but also takes a shrewd understanding of the market conditions, current trends and one’s target audience.  There is no other brand that has such a masterful command of this balance of detail more so than Bulgari.

With the release of the new Bulgari Octo Watch, the brand shows just how masterfully conscious and commanding it is of the details of the watch as well as its presentation to the world. From the decision to hold the press event in a church, to the press releases that were distributed on metal octagon shaped USBs and Octo shaped cuff links, every effort was made to pay ultimate tribute to the classical octagon shape and the signature design quality of the Octo Watch.

It can be said that much detail was put into the design of the watch by having less detail. Most of the detail is in the case with the many facets and surfaces. However, careful attention was paid to balance it with a simple dial and to insert the signature 12 and 6 numerals from the classic BVLGARI BVLGARI Watch. This in itself is a masterful display of detail alone. And not to be forgotten, is the detail of the black ceramic crown head - a small one but interesting and unique nonetheless.

The second part of Bulgari’s presentation of the Octo watch consisted of a dinner event held at the Stadio dei Marmi, site of the Olympics in 1960.

As I stepped out of the shuttlebus at the entrance to the ramp that led down towards the old stadium, I was in complete awe of the grandeur of the evening that was presented in front of me. Roman statues surrounded the entire stadium watching over the festivities.

More details! The tables are set up in the configuration of an octagon, and notice the placemats as well.

Drummers perform for the audience as they pound on trash cans.

Acrobatic balancing act by some extremely strong men. Reminiscent of a Cirque du Soleil stunt.

All the evening's performers greet the audience.

Mr. Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bulgari Watch Design Centre Director.  Oliver and I had a brief chat with Mr. Stigliani. It was fascinating and engrossing. I asked him whether he had a team that worked with him. He said that he did work with a team that included external consultants from other countries and that they were important to get an "outside" perspective.

Mr. Stigliani explained how the Octo watch was in development for 2 years. I also asked him what factors does he keep in mind when designing a watch? Customer tastes? Trends? When asked how difficult it was to integrate the DNAs of the two brands, Mr. Stigliani mentioned that it was very difficult to do it the right way.

Both Oliver and I were fascinated with Mr. Stigliani's perspective, knowledge and passion. We both agreed after speaking with him that he is indeed a "Purist" and we were very pleased to hear that he does read the PuristSPro site.

Final Act: Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau Ballet. Flashback to the 80s!

Guests hit the aisles to dance to Spandau Ballet's hits as the evening continues on.

Thank you to Bulgari for a spectacular event and a memorable evening. The details were what stood out the to me the most and are what will make the brand and the Octo Watch stand out to the world.

I'm sure it added to the ambience to be inside of a past Olympic venue. And you can't go wrong with Spandau Ballet ;-)
