Blomman Mr Blue shares a captivating encounter with a Girard-Perregaux Ref. 9050 in Vienna, offering a detailed appreciation of its design nuances. This post is valuable for collectors interested in the subtle elegance of late 1990s GP models and their connection to historical watchmaking aesthetics. Blomman Mr Blue's observations highlight how modern elements blend with traditional design in this reference.
Friends,
In Vienna, I had the opportunity to see a lot of interesting and beautiful watches.
Among them this late 1990s GP, the Girard-Perregaux reference 9050!
At first glance it looks very “clean and simple” but if you look closer you will find a lot of very nice details!
Plain white dial with applied Roman numerals in gold, perfectly matches with gold hands.
Clean, elegant, sober with a lot of class!
The dial reminds me of old pocket watches, where this is often seen.
But then the “old and traditional” is brought back to modern time by the “Automatic” on the dial.
Also, the location and design of the sub-second gives you a hint that this is a modern watch.
The 34mm case is quite “anonymous” and gives space to the dial to be in focus. I like that!
Same with the profiled bezel, adds a character to the case, but still does not steal focus from the dial.
By some reasons (maybe the lugs and clean dial) when I see this watch I come to think of Amagnetic watches such as the Geophysic, Antimagnetque or Jubileum from the 1950s…
Beautiful, no-nonsense watches!
I find them very charming - one day I should write a dedicated post on the subject…
Inside is the automatic movement, GP Calibre 3000.
A well proved reliable movement.
On the back is an open case back which lets us see the movement in full.
Here’s another detail I love about this watch – look at the ratio between the case size and movement!
The movement really fills the case and shows its beauty in a good way.
This is something I would love to see in the current GP 1966 line.
Decoration of the movement is nothing extravagant, nicely finished with Geneva bars and smoothly rounded lines on the bridges.
Another interesting detail is that the watch belongs to the wife of one of the Moderators here.
This makes at least three wives’ of PuristSPro Moderators having a GP watch in their collection.
I guess, Moderator wives has good… Not only in men but in watches as well…!
Thank you to the Moderator for showing me this elegant watch!
Best

.. I could not join in this time in my home-city; guess you cannot have it all ! Either way, a whole number of GP\'S sighted, a true pleasure. Thx for this elevating & charming share ! Cheers & Best, hs
Very nice timepiece, excellent movement, looks well-proportioned to me.... maybe it would have been nicer without small seconds imho..
are surely worth a closer look. There are a few different versions with or without small seconds and different dial variants. Maybe a project to dig out some info on these from my catalogues and do a longer post. Here is my favourite version, Ref 9053: Photo credit Timetunnel Japan. CC
This model looks better without seconds hand....I have just googled this ref. and there are indeed few versions....I have learnt something else today...Thanks
This one is really nice. And I have a true love for the Lange 1815 Sidestep with its sub second dial at 4 ;-) Best wishes Alkiro
Was a real pleasure seeing this one live. Thanks to the moderator\'s significant other for allowing him to share it with us!
