Blomman Mr Blue unearths a fascinating piece of horological history, showcasing Girard-Perregaux's role as the official watch of Capital Airlines in the early 1950s. His post provides rare archival evidence, including vintage advertisements, that highlight the brand's Gyromatic models during this era. This historical context offers valuable insight into GP's mid-century market presence and its connection to the burgeoning airline industry.
Friends,
This Thursday we go back to 1951. This is the earliest year I have found proof of Girard-Perregaux being the Official watch of Capital Airlines!
Not sure the exact year when GP became the Official watch of the airline, but I have documents showing that at least in 1951 and 1952 they were.
During this time the Gyromatic was the watch promoted.
Maybe the pilots had a Gyromatic reference 6787…?
A sure way to date this document: July 2nd 1951.
In 1961 Capital Airlines was merged into United Airlines.
Fun facts you may find while collecting watch related documents….

I really like, you will need to show me this one next time! CC
Love that one. The contrast between the simple but very class dial with this case is just mouthwatering. Best, Nicolas
I have to say in connection to the boarding passes and the original marketing material, a real winner! Great post, cool watch!
But prepare to get charmed.... I typical Dandy watch! ;) Best Blomman
