Dxboon revisits the Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon, celebrating its unique blend of haute horlogerie and playful whimsy. This article highlights how GP's engineering prowess miniaturized a slot machine mechanism into a high-end timepiece, showcasing the brand's commitment to innovative and unconventional complications. Dxboon emphasizes the watch's ability to evoke a sense of fun while maintaining serious horological credentials.

One of the many traits I cherish about GP is their sense of whimsy.  These whimsical aspects bring a spark of fun, and added interest to a timepiece.  Such extraordinary complications can also serve to showcase a manufacture's ability to engineer and design horological functions that are unique and out-of-the-ordinary.  One such watch that has long captured my imagination is the Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon.

An iconic GP golden bridge anchors the beautiful tourbillon, but perhaps this once, it is only a supporting player on the dial.  The real showstopper is the jackpot display at the 12 o'clock position.

The jackpot display alone might've been a curiosity, and dismissed as something simply amusing, but what sets this watch apart is the fact that the slots actually work via a miniature lever on the side of the case.  The slot machine mechanism is set into motion when the lever of this mini "one-armed bandit" is pulled.  The lever is connected to a rack.  Once pulled, the handle raises the rack, which slides to its highest point.  At its apex, and only then (what is referred to as an "all or nothing mechanism"), the rack starts the jackpot reels spinning before slowly sliding back down.  Approximately two-thirds of the way back down to the zero position, the rack activates stoppers which halt the spinning jackpot reels one by one, and simultaneously engages a striking mechanism.

A closer look at the spinning reels of the jackpot from the dial side.  The three reels spin, and then stop randomly on one of the possible five symbols, while a hammer strikes a gong, producing a chime reminiscent of the gaming machines in a casino.  There are 125 possible combinations that can occur when you pull the lever, but only one represents the jackpot: three bells in a row!

The movement from the verso.  It is absolutely lovely!

GP had to surmount numerous challenges in creating this watch; essentially miniaturizing a slot machine, while simultaneously integrating a tourbillon and timekeeping functions.  Because Girard-Perregaux is not about doing what is easy, but instead tries to find the most elegant and complete solution, they chose not to simply create a jackpot module for an existing movement.  The manufacture took months to develop an entirely new integrated caliber designated GPFAY08 Jackpot Tourbillon.

If you are wondering about the symbols used in the watch's jackpot display, they were not chosen at random.  For this exceptional watch, Girard-Perregaux chose to pay homage to the first mechanical slot machine, the famous "Liberty Bell," which was invented at the end of the 19th century and named in honor of the American independence.  GP's attention to detail extends to the actual reels, which are crafted in gold, hollowed out, and then delicately lacquered in the five possible suits: hearts, spades, diamonds, horseshoes, and bells.

This watch proves that haute horlogerie doesn't automatically mean staid and unimaginative.  This is a beautifully realized timepiece.  You can tell time with it, and marvel at the horological prowess of the tourbillon under golden bridge, but ultimately what makes it cool (To me, at least!) is the slot machine complication!  It's fun!  It's a toy for deep-pocketed men (or women) who continue to embrace their inner child.  What's wrong with that?  A little game of chance adds some spice to any day!  smile

About the Girard-Perregaux Ref. Vintage1945

The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 line, introduced in 1994, draws inspiration from historical models, specifically a 1945 Art Deco piece. This collection is characterized by its rectangular or tonneau-shaped cases and a design language that evokes mid-20th century aesthetics. The Vintage 1945 series quickly became a cornerstone of Girard-Perregaux's offerings in the 1990s, reinterpreting classic forms with contemporary watchmaking standards. It represents a significant period for the brand in re-establishing its heritage-inspired collections.

Early models in the Vintage 1945 series typically featured stainless steel cases, though gold variants were also produced. The case dimensions varied depending on the specific model, often presenting a balanced profile suitable for dress wear. These watches were frequently equipped with automatic movements, showcasing Girard-Perregaux's in-house capabilities or finely finished outsourced calibers. The crystal was commonly sapphire, ensuring durability and legibility, while water resistance was generally suitable for daily wear rather than aquatic activities.

For collectors, the Vintage 1945 series appeals to those interested in neo-vintage watches that successfully blend historical design with modern execution. The 1994 introduction year marks it as one of the earlier and more influential lines from Girard-Perregaux's resurgence in the 1990s. Its various iterations, including time-only, small seconds, and later complicated versions, offer a range of choices for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive rectangular watch with a clear lineage.

We all know his big love affair with this slot machine from GP. Ok, this watch doesn't forget to first be a high end horological watch ( Tourbillon with gold bridge ), and the slot machine is, in my opinion, a pretext to show the GP madness and talent in miniaturizing such a " divertissement ". But the major issue, for me, it that this is a difficult watch to wear. Not for the association of the slot and the tourbillon, but because of its huge volumes. BUT are watches made to be useful or to be

...it is getting close to Halloween, so torture seems appropriate. :-) This is one of my favorite GP watches to dream about, because it's just so fun! Plus, the manufacture has really done a great job finishing the movement and creating the jackpot mechanism. I love the treatment of the slot machine reels! Cheers, Daos

...and the XXL case on this Vintage 1945 is not for the faint of heart. I can forgive the choice in this instance, because to me this watch is simply not made to be an everyday wearer. It's an amusement, and something to showcase all that GP can create. It's like when I watch the haute couture presentations at Paris' Fashion Week. Some of the outfits look amazing, but you wouldn't wear them ever (unless you are a runway model). However, these outfits give us the sense of what that fashion house
