Friends, next to communicating via this cyber domain, or enjoying pictures & stories,
it is the meeting with Purist friends, which always are highlights of our hobby.

Along these lines, it happened that a well known Purist, afficionado and
"big" collector of Girard Perrgaux Vintages but also moderns of GP, paid
a short visit to my city.

This meant a lovely afternoon in one of our numerous Cafรจs, an afternoon
of enjoying some watch talk & looking on some of our mutual timepieces,
chatting and also some pics were taken.
Of course we had a nice dinner in one of my fav restaurants, this time
an Italian one.

Next to a number of his GP treasures of this seasoned Vintage GP expert,
he also had brought with him a modern piece of the concurrent collection.
It was a rectangular, Karree type GP, which I happened to have missed
seeing in real until then.

As this is neither a report nor a review, I thought to just show
a Collage of his Vintage 1945 XXL, which he allowed me to play with
and even wearing it.
- This as since a while I was curious to try this timepiece.
As I knew it is a rather big piece, I was also specifically interested
in the proportion and on the feeling on my average sized wrist.

To my big surprise the splendid experience brought the notion
that it is a very cleverly dimensioned and devised layout of the
whole watch, which makes it very attractive to wear:

The catch is that there are curves, curves all over: not only
on the case, but also of the dial itself and the bidirectional
curving of the watch glass.

These together with lovely Breguet type numbers and a small
second @ 6, which is a bit hollowed beneath the surface level,
rendered a great impression to me.

To me yes, a bit big case, but very proportioned & it is
wearing quite pleasantly and thus, the size is absolutely ok.
A masculine piece, true definitely but with enough charm to generate
an overall positive impression.

So without further ado, here this little compilation, which in fact
meant a very positive experience with this XXL Karree format.

GP Vintage 1945 XXL

Dear friend (you know, who you are), thank you
for coming, the nice hours spent and thx
for allowing me to play with your modern Vintage 1945.

Cheers & Best,

About the Girard-Perregaux Ref. Vintage1945

The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 line, introduced in 1994, draws inspiration from historical models, specifically a 1945 Art Deco piece. This collection is characterized by its rectangular or tonneau-shaped cases and a design language that evokes mid-20th century aesthetics. The Vintage 1945 series quickly became a cornerstone of Girard-Perregaux's offerings in the 1990s, reinterpreting classic forms with contemporary watchmaking standards. It represents a significant period for the brand in re-establishing its heritage-inspired collections.

Early models in the Vintage 1945 series typically featured stainless steel cases, though gold variants were also produced. The case dimensions varied depending on the specific model, often presenting a balanced profile suitable for dress wear. These watches were frequently equipped with automatic movements, showcasing Girard-Perregaux's in-house capabilities or finely finished outsourced calibers. The crystal was commonly sapphire, ensuring durability and legibility, while water resistance was generally suitable for daily wear rather than aquatic activities.

For collectors, the Vintage 1945 series appeals to those interested in neo-vintage watches that successfully blend historical design with modern execution. The 1994 introduction year marks it as one of the earlier and more influential lines from Girard-Perregaux's resurgence in the 1990s. Its various iterations, including time-only, small seconds, and later complicated versions, offer a range of choices for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive rectangular watch with a clear lineage.

And fully agree on the XL case - may be large overall but it's so well proportioned that one can easily pull it off on an average sized wrist. Will I see this one on your wrist next time we meet?
