Dje presents an exciting overview of Jaeger-LeCoultre's new Atmos clock releases from SIHH 2008, celebrating the Atmos's 80th anniversary. The article showcases stunning new versions, including the exquisite Atmos Marqueterie dedicated to Gustav Klimt's 'Adele Bloch-Bauer' and the futuristic Marc Newson design.

The Atmos clock is 80 years old in 2008. Jean Leon Reutter invented this amazing piece of watchmaking history in 1928! More than 750 000 Atmos clocks have been produced so far!

Quite obviously the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture is offering this year several new amazing versions to please us.

I'm more than pleased in fact.

Adele Bloch-Bauer, Austria's Mona Lisa by Gustav Klimt

The first and the most beautiful piece of new Atmos is the Atmos Marqueterie. This second Atmos Marqueterie after the Mucha in 2000 is now dedicated to Gustav Klimt's portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, known as the Austria's Mona Lisa. This Art Nouveau portrait is realized in a series of 10 Atmos clocks.

A hundred years old and still so beautiful

Displaying hours, minutes, months and the moon phases, this clock is decorated with more than 1200 pieces of wood and gold leafs.

The new Marqueterie Atmos

The 12 hours marker is a cushion-cut yellow sapphire. The other markers are made of petrified wood on mother of pearl.

A glorious cabinet of more than 1200 pieces of wood

The numerous essences of wood bring the various colours:

yellowwood, yellowheart, Andean boxwood, East Indian satinwood, lemon wood, madrona burr, blue

amboyna burr, tulipwood burr, myrtlewood burr.

Many pieces of wood are covered with yellow or pink leafs of gold

This cabinet is truly amazing of beauty if you are appealed by the Art Nouveau.

Let art touch you

The wooden cabinet opens by itself by touching an hidden button.

or touch art in the middle of the bottom part

The spring opening the cabinet rewinds when you close it back.

The nicest Atmos a Regulateur inside

Unfortunately this Atmos will remain out of the reach of many of us, but it is in the reach of anybody ready to buy a platinum Master Repeater!       I would choose quite easily between the two!

The nicest JLC piece this year perhaps

The most affordable new Atmos comes in the form of a Boutique Edition called Pavillon. It is made of glass, carbon fibre and aluminium. The calibre gets a quite modern ruthenium colour for an overall modern design.

The new Atmos Pavillon Boutique Edition

The new Atmos Astronomique is inspired by the Atmos CHI of 1934. On top of the hours and minutes it displays a view of the Northern sky on a rotating disc. It also displays the month and the equation of time.

The new Atmos Astronomique

The two lateral glass wings reproduce fragments of sky maps inspired by the Harmonia Macrocosmica, the cosmographic atlas published in 1660 by Andreas Cellarius.

The amazing Atmos Astronomique dial

I've kept the dream Atmos for the end!

This new Atmos was designed by the well known 44 year old Australian creator and designer Marc Newson.

Atmos 561 by Marc Newson

The designer voluntarily proposed his collaboration to Jaeger-LeCoultre as he is himself a fan of the Atmos clock.

Simple and gloriously amazingly beautiful

This limited series of 888 pieces is housed in a Baccarat crystal bubble that brings us back to the industrial design of the 50s, the furniture piece as a work of art!

A Baccarat crystal cabinet

This transparent and simple design is eminently modern while reinventing a classicism from the past. This is what I would call an obviously appealing design.

The irreal world of Marc Newson

The clock shows the hours, minutes, the month and the moon phases.

Do you like crystal

The hands are made in blued aluminium.

No you're not drunk

Believe me this is the JLC piece in 2008!

Atmos 561 with the calibre 561

The true spirit of Jaeger-LeCoultre: return to the spirit of the invention, design, historical background and experience! This new iteration of the Atmos clock is a landmark in the Atmos history!

I love it

I hope you loved it but please let me one!  smile

Agreed - the Newson Atmos if THE MJLC piece thie year.

Well done to MJLC for contacting outside designer talent to put a new spin on the movement. Brilliant and a clock that I am looking to buy. Excellent - since the 1950's design was taken out, I had removed the Atmos from my wish list. The clock is back!!!! Thanks for the excellent photos Jerome - love it! Andrew H

Every horology fan

should have an Atmos to qualify! I'm not yet ready to accept the Marc Newson until seen in-person. I like the idea of a moonphase function because an almost perpetual power supply seems logical for such a slow display. None of my moonphase watches are worn enough to maintain the display. As you said, the marquetry piece is way out of reach to nearly everyone but the Pavilion Boutique may be tantalising. Thanks for the report. Regards, MTF

1st, Jerome, Congrats for your excellent photos

Yes, my friend, these one are axcellent! Then, and most important, thanks a lot for your write up. I never considered to buy a clock since a recent time, when I pay a little attention to the Atmos . Yes, I have to confess that even if I of course knew that Atmos Clocks existed, I thought that they weren't for me. And seeing them many time, discovering them each time more and more, made me love them. A simple one, a Designer one, or with an astronomic complication... Just one, well chosen, an,d t
