W72's heartfelt post celebrates the Lunar New Year of the Snake by showcasing two unique Jaeger-LeCoultre watches from his collection, both featuring Chinese Zodiac themes. His reflection on the cultural significance of the zodiac and the enduring charm of these "older" JLC pieces offers a refreshing perspective amidst new releases. This article provides a delightful blend of cultural appreciation and horological passion, making vintage JLC models relevant to new readers.
To all Purists members let me wish all a Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year of the Snake.
The Year of the Snake? this may seemed odd and almost weird but in Eastern and particularly in Chinese Culture and someone familiar with the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of the Snake is just one of the twelve zodiac signs. This year is the year of the Snake. Obviously, there are ancient stories on the selection of these twelve animals. But like most ancient tales they are mostly to fascinate and perhaps to pass on an aspect of the culture to children, particularly at this time of the year.
This year the Lunar New Year falls on the 10th of February and there will be lots of festivities in countries where the Lunar New Year is celebrated. Like the calendar New Year, there will be new resolutions made, re-acquainting of the old, but sometime forgotten friendship, a fresh start and the looking forward to a better year ahead.
This year we saw a new batch of novelties from Jaeger LeCoultre and our esteemed moderator has already showed us the details of some. They are all very impressive and certainly gave us, those who have a liking to JLC, something to think about and something to yearn for and hopefully acquire in the coming year.
Despite all the new releases, I took some time over the last few days to "re-acquaint" the watches in my small collections. I took out two of which that I would like to share with you. I have posted them here in the past. These are watches linked to Chinese Zodiac, timely because of the coming new year.
I hope you find them still interesting in view of the recent releases with new multiple complications and new designs. These “older” JLC have their charm and it makes the watch collecting that much more interesting with their unique theme. Furthermore, when acquiring new watches is becoming so much more "taxing", it is good to look at our collection and count our "blessings".
The twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs starting with this year - Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit and Dragon.
