Amanico initiates a compelling discussion on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic, specifically debating the aesthetic and historical significance of its 'cross-hair' dial versus the 'no cross-hair' variant. His post, sparked by the rare opportunity to acquire a New Old Stock cross-hair dial, invites collectors to explore the nuances of this iconic reference, the E 168. This article delves into the preferences and historical context surrounding these distinct dial designs.

That IS the question!

In 2014, I had the unbelievable opportunity to " fall " on a new old stock Cross Hair Dial, and I hesitated to jump on it, a bit, just a few seconds, to tell the truth.

The Geophysic is, by far, more known with this dial:

Indeed, this is the dial which appears in all the ads, catalogs and booklets. And which is installed in most of the Geophysics which pop in the different collectors markets, or auctions.

But we know that the Geophysic E 168, to be precise, came with another dial.

The history behind the cross hair dial can be read here:

This dial has been drawed in January 1958, at the very beginning of the Geophysic Production, and has been housed in a few ( impossible to tell how many were fitted, though ) E 168, in stainless steel or in yellow gold, from what I observed, during these last years.

So, I decided to install it in my Geophysic, since I could also keep my old dial.

Here is the outcome:

The applied indexes and hour markers are very elegant, and the fact that it also have these minutes / seonds numbers each 5 minutes is very à propos for a Chronometer, I find.

The Cross Hair is the last detail, a kind of nice cherry on the cake.

I fell for it, yes, but only if I could keep the more " popular " dial, which was possible.

A nicely fitted box!

I am in Heaven!

To help you to decide, here is a side by side picture of mine, with Patrice's one. How many times did we see these two dials side by side!

Definitely, I am starting to be convinced that getting both of them is THE solution!

Best,

Nicolas.

About the Jaeger LeCoultre Geophysic Ref. E168

The Geophysic E168 is a notable reference within the Jaeger LeCoultre Geophysic series, originally introduced in 1958. This particular model is distinguished by its robust construction and precision engineering, designed for scientific observation and accuracy. It represents a period when watch manufacturers focused on creating instruments capable of performing reliably in challenging environments, emphasizing technical merit over decorative embellishments. The E168 is recognized for its clean dial layout and functional aesthetic, reflecting its purpose-built origins.

The case of the Geophysic E168 is crafted from stainless steel, measuring 35mm in diameter. It houses the manual-winding Caliber 478BWS, a movement known for its precision and anti-magnetic properties, featuring a hacking seconds function for accurate time setting. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal, contributing to its vintage character and period-appropriate design. The solid case back further underscores its utilitarian design, protecting the movement from external influences.

For collectors, the Geophysic E168 holds significance as an early example of a highly technical watch from Jaeger LeCoultre. Its appeal lies in its historical context and the engineering principles it embodies. Variants of the Geophysic line are sought after for their understated design and the quality of their movements, making the E168 a key reference for those interested in mid-20th century precision timekeeping instruments.

But who will have both ?.. Apart from possible well-known subjects(?) ;))

- I guess, for me it would be tough to decide, but in my humble case, it's a non-issue, as I "only" own the TT ss/Tribute type, which I love intensively !! Maybe it may be a good reason for Geophysic GTG's to have several "flavors" on one table .. What an enjoyable share !! Here 2 quick shots, for kind greetings !! Ss-Version/ Crosshair: Love during day :)) And night ! .. Very happy with my humble choice ! ;) Thx & Best hs
