Amanico delves into the enigmatic Jaeger-LeCoultre Mystery or Galaxy watch, a vintage piece that continues to reveal new details to even seasoned collectors. This review explores the watch's shared history among brands like Longines, Wittnauer, and Vacheron Constantin within the Longines Wittnauer Group. Amanico highlights the unique design of the JLC Reference E 334, a rare model with conflicting catalog information that adds to its allure.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Mariner E329 is a notable vintage reference from the late 1950s, often associated with the brand's 125th Anniversary (Jubilé) collection due to its contemporary release and shared design language. It represents a period when Jaeger-LeCoultre was expanding its robust and water-resistant timepieces, offering a blend of elegant design and practical functionality.
This model typically features a self-winding movement, often the Caliber K880 or K881, known for its reliability. The case is commonly stainless steel, with a diameter around 34-36mm, and often presents a distinctive C-shape profile. Dials are frequently white or silver, with applied hour markers and a date aperture, protected by a plexiglass crystal.
The E329 holds relevance for collectors seeking well-preserved examples of mid-century Jaeger-LeCoultre watches that combine a classic aesthetic with a robust movement. Its connection to the Jubilé era and its relatively consistent availability, albeit often with condition issues, make it a persistent pursuit for those looking for original, unmolested pieces.
even though they are extremely "dated." Years ago I had a swatch with a mystery minute hand. I do think these should be left to history, as I don't think there is much a market for a new one. There are so many other concepts to be developed. Thanks for sharing, Nicolas! -Dean
The mystery dial is a bit of a mystery.... Not sure how many different versions existed but for sure a lot of them! They were at least in the catalog between 1957 - 1965. Here are a few scans from my archive: 1957: Here is the wife's but with black dial. And the co-signed case. 1957: Here is mine, but with different lugs than in the scan above. 1965: Best Blomman
Fascinating watches. Did Cartier's Mystereuse concept precede this or come after?
Vacheron never made the Galaxy, the Vacheron name engraved in the caseback was a advertising effort and you can confirm this by contacting the Vacheron forums (their official ones from the producer not the ones here) they have neither reference numbers of the movements or cases in their archives. LeCoultre is Jaeger LeCoultre , it was the foreign export name for Jaeger in the US along with the VXN stamp on the movement, they used the LeCoultre and cased most of thes pieces in the US due to the t
I wonder if VC is not in the same situation than JLC. When it comes to the US Market, does VC still have the archives? It is just an hypothesis, nothing more. And of course yes, you are right, many JLC movements were used by VC, Patek, AP... Best, Editor Man. Nicolas
