Amanico initiates a compelling discussion comparing the Jaeger-LeCoultre Tribute to Polaris 1965 and 1968 models, posing questions about collector preferences and ownership of both. His personal decision to acquire both re-editions sets the stage for a nuanced exploration of these distinct yet historically significant dive watches.
The Memovox Polaris 1965 is a notable early iteration of Jaeger-LeCoultre's alarm-equipped diver's watch. This reference is distinguished by its triple-crown configuration and internal rotating bezel, a design that set it apart from other alarm watches of its era. It represents a significant development in the Memovox line, moving towards a more robust and purpose-built aesthetic while retaining the signature mechanical alarm function. The Polaris 1965 is recognized for its specific case construction and dial layout that differentiate it from subsequent Polaris models.
This particular reference features a stainless steel case, typically measuring 42mm in diameter, which was substantial for its time. It houses a self-winding mechanical movement, specifically the Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 825, known for its reliability and integrated alarm mechanism. The watch is fitted with a domed acrylic crystal, contributing to its vintage profile. The design prioritizes legibility and functionality, with a black dial providing contrast for the luminous markers and hands.
For collectors, the Memovox Polaris 1965 holds interest as an original example of the Polaris series. Its relatively limited production and distinctive design elements make it a sought-after piece. It appeals to those who appreciate the historical evolution of the Memovox line and the brand's early ventures into watches with enhanced water resistance and specialized functions. The Polaris 1965 is a foundational model within the broader Memovox family.
And as you know......this process has been convoluted. Steel tribute to 65 Steel tribute to 68 Vintage 65 I start here with the Steel Tribute to 65.....super cool. Others will follow,,,,slowly!
Own a duo of JLC Tribute 1965 / Original 1965. Wow... Best, Nicolas
No question I prefer the 68 both vintage and modern. But the 65 has its charms too - I am opening up to that model slowly. I have another question: How do the re-editions compare to the originals? I think this would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that. best E
Original: The Tributes are very close to the originals. Except the movement, which is not the Cal 825 anymore, but the modern Cal 956. The alarm sounds like a cricket on the vintage, while, on the Tribute, it sounds like a school bell. Best, Nicolas
Comparing 65 v 68 is hard. Although similar, they are so different. I think of it like this....65=Aston. 68=Porsche Both fantastic. 65 has more class. 68 has more force. If i was pushed (and i rarely am...lol) I would go 65 over 68, but I would find it difficult to say why.
... both versions, but I want to be honest: I love much more the looks of the 1968 model due to the big luminous creamy indexes which give a very distinctive and particular personality to this watch. A look that I really love and I´m doing my best to get an example of the Tribute to 1968. Now, I look forward to your "Black Friday" report with much ansiety. I already got my pills at hand my friend! Un abrazo afectuoso Abel
