Cozmopak's original post sparks a vital discussion on the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk, positioning it as a horological masterpiece. This article delves into why the Zeitwerk's innovative digital display, powered by a sophisticated remontoire, sets it apart in the landscape of luxury watchmaking. Cozmopak challenges readers to consider the Zeitwerk's enduring significance amidst contemporary market trends and new releases.

Is the Zeitwerk one of the most creative watches ever made?

Collectors can quibble about the aesthetics and current Lange allocation policies, but the way the Zeitwerk employs a remontoire in order to display time in a digital horizontal manner a la the Dresden Opera House clock is absolutely breathtaking.  Whereas other brands may have a remontoire that simply spins a governor for visual impact, the Zeitwerk harnesses the complication to display time creatively and intuitively.

There are only 3 brands (to my knowledge) that have pulled off a horizontal digital time display, and the Zeitwerk is the one that works reliably.

Complaints about size are overblown in my experience with the watch.  It fits me perfectly and I have an average wrist.

The market is overwhelmed these days with new watchmakers and time-only watches from the likes of Rexhep Rexhepi achieving eye watering auction results.  But a look at the not so distant past unearths true masterpieces like the Zeitwerk, which I believe will be remembered as an important watch in the decades to come.

Please disagree!

picture above. I love it! I was an early adopter so mine is the one that has the 5 second load movement before the date flips. What are the other watches that you refer to that pulled off a horizontal digital display? Perhaps you have forgotten one???? Thanks for this post. Your watch is beautiful! Enjoy!

A great watch with unique features. This said Lange new policies did drive me away from the brand and also sold my Lange 1. Beside the new price asking a client to pay 30-50% upfront without knowing when the watch will come is borderline crazy so a hard pass for me no matter how nice the watch is. Christian

It's incredibly simple in the front and incredibly complex in the back, and has a natural uncontrived connection with the history of ALS. To be honest, this is the only ALS I really wanted, and very happy to have it! Btw, what are the other horizontal display digital mechanical watches? I'm aware of IWC Pallweber, FPJ vagabondage II, HW, DB etc, but as far as I remember, I don't think any of those has horizontal display! I could be wrong though ...

I'm trying to find the article where I read about the other brands that have accomplished the horizontal digital display, and I can't find it now!! But just from a 30 minute google and chatGPT search, I can't find a single one that has both a horizontal display and a jumping hours/minutes function aside from the Zeitwerk.

The ZW is a very cool watch. The only thing is that it's not reliable by my definition of reliability. For individuals who use this watch daily (and most people don't, if you own this watch, you probably rotate through 3 or so watches) this watch is generally not very reliable. But it's probably the most reliable of all the watches within this category. Which in itself is not a reliable category. Otherwise, I agree with you about everything else. Very cool. A little thick for me - especially wit
