Emmanuel, known as 'quattro' on WatchProSite, presents an in-depth look at Hervé Schlüchter's 'L'Essentiel,' the inaugural timepiece in the 'Tree of Life' trilogy. His detailed photographic essay and initial impressions offer a crucial first look at this 'philosophical regulator,' setting the stage for community discussion on its unique design and horological significance. This article explores why 'L'Essentiel' stands out in the independent watchmaking landscape.

First opus of a trilogy named Tree of Lifewhich will be completed in the following years, L'Essentiel (The Essential) is a "philosophical regulator" created by Hervé Schlüchter.

The steel case measures 39 x 10.37 mm.

The design of the dial is inspired by a regulator created by Antide Janvier in 1800.

The watch is powered by Caliber HS-01, which features a mustache-shaped anchor.

The particular variant above and just below has an all black dial. The peripheral circle for the minutes and the seconds subdial are made of Grand Feu enamel.

The variant below features white enamel minutes and seconds and a non colored German silver guilloché main plate.

The hour-disc features a sun with "Hodie Nunc" (latin for Today Now) at 12 o'clock.

And a moon with "Amor Gratia" (Love Gratitude) at 24/0.

The mustache-shaped anchor again.

This other variant below has "Gloria" (instead of "Hodie Nunc") at 12.

And here is another last variant below, with an anthracite guilloché main plate.

To be honest the philosophical "crap" isn't the best part of the watch, imo.
